Nashville (Tenn.) Christ Presbytarian quarterback Zack Weatherly is currently committed to Tennessee-Chattenooga, but that has not stopped other schools for expressing interest. Weatherly says several schools continue to talk to him, one being an ACC program in the Syracuse Orange.
Weatherly said offensive coordinator Tim Lester reached out within the last couple of weeks, and the interest has grown from there. Lester traveled down to Tennessee to watch Weatherly throw in person, and the 6-foot-1 prospect said things went pretty well.
"He said (to my coach) that I did great," Weatherly said. "He told him I did good and he was going to call me. I think I did good. I completed about every pass so I think it was good."
An offer was not extended yet, but it is clear Weatherly has caught the Orange's attention as they search for a second quarterback this cycle. When Syracuse first reached out, Weatherly said he spoke to both Lester and head coach Scott Shafer. He has a strong first impression of both.
Weatherly says he has a lot of interest in Syracuse despite his pledge elsewhere. He watched their game against the LSU Tigers on Saturday and came away impressed.
"I think they did great against LSU," he said. "To compete with them the way they did was impressive."
The Volunteer State product, after watching last week's game and familiarizing himself with Lester's offense, believes he would be a perfect fit for Syracuse.
"I'm a pass first guy but I love to run the ball," Weatherly said. "Two people that everyone compares me to are Marcus Mariota and Johnny Manziel. I think I would fit in great. We do a lot of the same things at my school that they do at Syracuse."
Weatherly added that an offer would be worth exploring even though he is committed to UTC. The opportunity to play for a power five school might be enough to entice a flip. That, however, will depend on whether or not an offer is extended. But if it is?
"It would mean a lot," he said. "I would for sure be interested. I would go on a visit."
Weatherly is listed at 6-foot-1, 180-pounds and runs a 4.5 40-yard dash.
