Class of 2016 punter Marshall Long has been offered a preferred walk-on spot by Syracuse

Syracuse has offered a 2016 punter as a preferred walk-on. More details inside.

China Grove (N.C.) South Rowan punter Marshall Long holds two scholarship offers, one from Army and one from The Citadel. On Wednesday, Syracuse got into the mix by offering him a preferred walk-on spot.

"Right now (it's) a preferred walk-on," Long said. "But if I beat the punter they have on now my freshman year, coach said most likely I'll be put on scholarship."

Long has also received interest from several other schools and has visits lined up to Georgia, Citadel and Virginia Tech. He wants to visit Syracuse if his schedule allows, but that is not a certainty at this point. His interest in the Orange is high, but he is still evaluating his opportunities.

"I mean I'm interested, but it's far from home," Long said. "Also, I wish I was offered a scholarship because Syracuse is expensive and out of state. But it's ACC and that's where I want to be."

There is no rush to make a decision for Long, who says he believes more offers for punters will come out over the next two months. He plans to see how things shape out then, evaluate all of his options, and make the best decision for his future.

Current Syracuse punter Riley Dixon is in his final season with the Orange. Freshman Sterling Hofrichter is redshirting and could take over the position next year.
