Preview - Syracuse vs. Elon

Preview of Syracuse v. Elon at the Carrier Dome Saturday November 22, 2015.

Game 3: Elon (2-1) vs. Syracuse (2-0)

Date: Saturday Nov. 21

Time: 7:00 p.m. EST

Location: Carrier Dome (Syracuse, NY)

The Elon Phoenix won their last game handily against Division II Belmonte Abbey 84-57.  Elon Senior guard Tanner Samson led all scorers with 18 points in 25 minutes.  Elon had five players score in double figures and had 28 points in the paint.  They had 38 bench points and 19 second chance points.  The Phoenix scored 20 points in the paint against #24 Michigan and 44 points down low against Charlotte in it’s first two regular season games.

Elon has a high three-point shooting percentage so if they heat up against the Orange zone there may just be a change in strategy for Syracuse. On the defensive end, Elon struggles to defend beyond the arc which could pose a problem if Syracuse gets hot.

The starting line up for the Phoenix is not especially tall, their two forwards freshman Tyler Seibring and red-shirt sophomore Brian Dawkins each standing 6’8’’.  Overall Syracuse is much taller than Elon but establishing rebounding position will be key.

The Orange eeked out a 79-66 win over the St. Bonaventure Bonnies on Tuesday night.  Syracuse forward Michael Gbinije led all scorers with 23 points.

The Phoenix are supposed to be an easy win for the Orange Saturday night.

Leading scorer so far this season for the Orange is Michael Gbinije with 19.5 points per game (ppg).  Trevor Cooney is close behind with 15.5 ppg and Malachi Richardson with 14.5 ppg.

In regular season contests, the Orange have scored 10 points in the paint against Lehigh, and 28 against St. Bonaventure.  Dajuan Coleman and Tyler Roberson are not yet an established presence in the block for Syracuse.  The fact that St. Bonaventure out-rebounded Syracuse 43-33 in their last game against the Bonnies is proof.

Tyler Lydon came off the bench for 31 minutes against the Bonnies scoring 13 points and grabbing six rebounds.  Lydon has become the X-factor for the Orange so far this season.
