Quote Book: Syracuse Tops Notre Dame

Post-game quote following Syracuse basketball's win over Notre Dame.

Syracuse Head Coach Jim Boeheim

OPENING STATEMENT
“I thought, offensively, Trevor got us going, and Tyler, in the first half. Most teams are guarding him, but they didn't guard him. It was pretty much like the Bahamas. He got his wide open looks, and he can make those shots. When they are given he has to take them. I don't think that will happen too many times. Offensively we felt we could get shots and score.

“The whole key to this game was defense on Colson and Auguste. They are good players. Colson had 30 down at Duke, Auguste is as good as anybody in the league, offensively. I thought we stepped up and made them take tough shots where we kept it out of there. It starts with our defense – that's the difference for us. We can score some points, we scored a lot at Virginia, but we couldn't win. We have to play better defense and that was really the difference tonight. Our defense was really good and that was really the difference in the game.”

ON LYDON'S DEFENSE
“I thought he did some good things. I think DaJuan started slow in the second half; he made a couple good plays down there but I just told him that loose ball, we’ve got to get it. We can’t let Auguste get it, we’ve got to get that, we’ve got to be tougher in those situations. I told Frank Howard, he’s driving, people are knocking the ball out of his hands, we can’t allow that to happen. We got going into the basket probably six times tonight and the ball got knocked away. We can’t let that happen. Although I think we played well, I think we can play a lot better and hopefully that’s what is ahead of us.”

ON GBINIJE TURNING IT ON IN THE SECOND HALF
“He got opportunities to drive in the second half. We felt that if we could get them isolated, then he could get to the basket against this team. We just tried to get him in situations – he had a freshman guarding him and he can get by that guy and he did. I was glad he hit that last three; he has been shooting better from the three the last few games so it was good for him to get that one to go down. I thought he made a great play when it was a 12-point game. They weren’t that far away from coming back when they switched zones, Michael drove in, threw it back out to Malachi (Richardson), Malachi hit the three and got fouled. That was a great play; that was a point guard type play. That was really big and he made a couple other plays like that. He had a really good floor game tonight and that’s important.”

ON THE 23-1 RUN
“We did a better job defensively. We moved the ball; we found we started to hit some shots. That always helps. We did a better job defensively; we got on their shooters and we did a better job when they got it inside, making them miss and that was the difference. Defensively we picked it up a little bit. Tyler did a good job in the middle and did a good job on offense too.”

ON DEFENDING TWO INSIDE THREATS
“We’ve got to try to keep it out of there and when they get it we’ve got to get somebody on them. We’ve been letting guys get it in there and letting them just turn and make layups practically so we’ve got to be better in there.”

ON GEORGIA TECH
“They’re a very good team. I think Georgia Tech is as good as anybody we are going to be playing. I think they’re really good. Smith has given them that extra thing that they didn’t have before and I just think they’re a really good team.”

Tyler Lydon

ON CONFIDENCE
“Yes. I’ve said it before when you see the ball go through the hoop it feels good. It makes you want to shoot the ball a bit more, quality and carefree.”

ON NOT TAKING A LOT OF SHOTS
“It’s kind of a mixture. I’m just trying to make the right play out there and it’s a learning process. I’m just trying to get everything down and make the right plays. Sometimes I feel like I’m there and just question myself. I just kind of go out there and play my game.”

ON MICHAEL GBINIJE
“He just lets me know that not every shot is going to fall. It’s something I’m pretty hard on myself about. I’m just trying to be perfect and that’s not something that’s possible in basketball. He just lets me know you’re not going to make every shot, but you have to stay confident, and just let it fly.”

Malachi Richardson

ON TREVOR COONEY'S PERFORMANCE
“It opens up everything for us. When Trev and Michael starts playing well, everybody starts playing well. We need those guys to shoot the ball well and defend. They did a great job tonight.”

ON LIMITING TURNOVERS
“We were rolling tonight, everyone was. Lydon, Trevor, Mike, Tyler Roberson, DC and I started going in the second half. We need everybody on this team.”

ON DIFFERENCE OF HAVING BOEHEIM BACK
“I think that’s just something people are running with. We had a coach on the sidelines who did a great job with us, we just weren’t able to win games. Who knows, if Coach Boeheim was there we might have still lost those games. But it happens, and we have to move on from it.”

Trevor Cooney

ON THIS GAME AS A RESUME BUILDER
“Absolutely, every game is big for us. No matter who it is, you have to win games, especially coming down the stretch you have to win games. You have to get that number up and every game is tough and a challenge, but you just have to come ready to play.”

ON THE UPCOMING GAMES
“If you look at our league, almost every game is close, every team is good, anybody can beat anybody. Georgia Tech has a win against Virginia, one of the best teams in the conference, so anyone can beat anyone. You just have to come ready to play.”

Notre Dame Head Coach Mike Brey

OPENING STATEMENT
“I think that what hurt us in the first half is that we turned it over nine times. We lead the country in the least amount of turnovers with nine and we had nine turnovers in the first half. That’s just too deep a hole. I thought the second half we got off to a good start, we were thinking maybe. But, they answered every charge. They were very focused and played very well. When you have two fifth-year senior guards that are men, they really control things. Those two guys are really good.

“We are a little rudderless at times without Demetrius, there’s no question. We aren’t sure when we’ll get him back. He is improving, and we sure would like to have him Sunday at 1 p.m., but we may have to keep playing without him for a while. We are fortunate in that you get thumped good like this, you get your butt kicked, but it only counts as one league loss. We are 5-3, and if we can get through the first half of the league at 6-3 with a win Sunday, I would be absolutely thrilled. But I think Syracuse is an NCAA Tournament team, and obviously having Jim back with them now, they have that look.”

ON SYRACUSE DEFENDING THE MIDDLE
“They did a great job. As well as Bonzie was playing, he was a little frustrated tonight and you have to give Syracuse credit for that. Zach had a couple around the bucket but they did a great job, Syracuse’s front line, on our big guys. We thought we could make some headway there, but not tonight. They were really good.”

ON SYRACUSE'S LOOK
“I think they’re confident. When you go down and win at Wake and then win at Duke within three days, you have something to work with there. No one wins at Virginia, so I wouldn’t even count that one. They know they have a very important homestand, and they started off playing very focused and very well.”
