2016 Orange Signees

February 3rd 11:29am

School: Nathaniel Narbonne High School (Harbor City, Calif.)
Position: Athlete
Height: 5-foot-9
Weight: 165 lbs.
Other Offers: Arizona, Hawaii, San Diego State, Utah, Wyoming

Recruitment Recap: Riley committed to Arizona, but the Wildcats asked him to greyshirt. This upset Riley and his camp, so he decided to look around. Syracuse had a connection to the coaching staff at Narbonne High, and quickly set up an official visit. They were able to snag Riley during that trip.

Who He Reminds Me Of: Riley is undersized, but an electric playmaker. He is always dangerous with the ball in his hands. Given his ability to also impact special teams as well as play receiver or running back at times, his skill set is similar to Tavon Austin.

February 3rd 10:26am

School: Fort Lauderdale High School (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.)
Position: Defensive End
Height: 6-foot-4
Weight: 234 lbs.
Other Offers: Georgia, Kentucky, Akron, Bowling Green, Cincinnati, Illinois, Miami (FL), Oregon State, Purdue

Recruitment Recap: Nelson was a former Miami commit who moved on after it seemed like the new staff was not as high on him as the old at the U. Syracuse took advantage and set up an official visit. Nelson committed during the trip, but it was not over. Georgia made a push and got him on campus for an official the weekend before National Signing Day. Despite weighing his options, the lure of the SEC was not enough and he signed with the Orange.

Who He Reminds Me Of: Nelson has length, athleticism and quickness off the edge. He looks a lot like Ron Thompson in terms of his body and the way he moves. Nelson has better defensive technique coming out of high school, however.

February 3rd 10:08am

School: Frederick Douglass High School (Upper Marlboro, Md.)
Position: Wide Receiver
Height: 6-foot-3
Weight: 195 lbs.
Other Offers: Maryland, Temple

Recruitment Recap: Butler is a former Maryland pledge who decommitted when their staff turned over. Syracuse targeted him due to their need at wide receiver and were able to get him to commit during a January official visit.

Who He Reminds Me Of: Butler has size, length and speed. He has a lot of promise but may need a year or two to refine some technique before he breaks out. His game has shades of Rob Moore with his length and long-stride running style.

February 3rd 9:52am

School: Woodland Hills Senior High School (Pittsburgh, Penn.)
Position: Running Back
Height: 6-foot-1
Weight: 214 lbs.
Other Offers: Akron, Bowling Green, Kansas, Miami (OH), Old Dominion, Pittsburgh, Temple, Toledo

Recruitment Recap: Shaw is a former Western Michigan commit who had a very close relationship with Syracuse running backs coach Mike Hart. When Hart came to Syracuse from WMU, Shaw was contacted immediately. He announced his commitment during an official visit in January.

Who He Reminds Me Of: Shaw is a bruiser who runs better than people think, can be a lead blocker and can catch the ball out of the backfield. Syracuse has not had that type of combination in some time. With his ability to do all of those things, Rob Konrad is an interesting comparison. That does not mean, however, he will turn into that.

February 3rd 8:32am

School: Ashwaubenon High School (Green Bay, Wisc.)
Position: Offensive Tackle
Height: 6-foot-6
Weight: 290 lbs.
Other Offers: Bowling Green, Harvard, Illinois State, Lafayette, Wyoming, Yale

Recruitment Recap: Servais was the first player to commit to Dino Babers at Syracuse. It was the first power five offer and he jumped at it given his strong relationship with the staff from their time recruiting him at Bowling Green.

Who He Reminds Me Of: Servais is not easily comparable. He is long, athletic and has a lot of upside. Maybe an Adam Terry type.

February 3rd 8:26am

School: Cass Technical High School (Detroit, Mich.)
Position: Outside Linebacker
Height: 6-foot-2
Weight: 220 lbs.
Other Offers: Ball State, Buffalo, Cincinnati, Illinois, Kent State, Navy, Toledo, Western Michigan

Recruitment Recap: Walton was an Illinois commit when he entered his weekend official visit in January. One day after returning home he decommitted. The next day he pledged Orange during an in-home visit from several members of the staff.

Who He Reminds Me Of: Walton hits hard and plays physical football. He is not a burner, but is quick enough to get into the backfield. His game is similar to Cam Lynch.

February 3rd 8:13am

School: Plant Senior High School (Tampa, Fla.)
Position: Defensive Back
Height: 5-foot-11
Weight: 170 lbs.
Other Offers: Indiana, Iowa State, South Florida, Southern Miss, Toledo, Utah, Western Michigan

Recruitment Recap: Another legacy recruit that the new staff inherited, Bradshaw was someone that they really liked and worked hard to retain. Bradshaw is a high school teammate of Rex Culpepper, and the two visited together. Once he met the new staff, he was all in.

Who He Reminds Me Of: Bradshaw is a versatile defensive back who can play corner or safety. His game is somewhat similar to Jerami Wilkes, who started for multiple years on The Hill and was a Doug Marrone recruit. Bradshaw is a bit taller, but their game is similar.

February 3rd 8:11am

School: Harlem High School (Machesney Park, Ill.)
Position: Defensive End
Height: 6-foot-3
Weight: 251 lbs.
Other Offers: Ball State, Bowling Green, Illinois, Toledo

Recruitment Recap: Black committed to Illinois early, but Syracuse was always on his mind. With the new staff, they had a previous relationship from their time at BGSU. They had an in-home visit that clinched the mutual interest and then the official visit that clinched his commitment.

Who He Reminds Me Of: Black has added weight and is now over 250 pounds. With that athleticism and size off the edge, he is a more gifted version of Micah Robinson.

February 3rd 8:10am

School: West High School (Waukesha, Wisc.)
Position: Offensive Guard
Height: 6-foot-5
Weight: 265 lbs.
Other Offers: Ball State, Bowling Green, Buffalo, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, FAU, Harvard, Illinois, Iowa State, New Mexico, Northern Illinois, Northwestern, Toledo, Virginia

Recruitment Recap: Heckel had a previous relationship with this staff from their time at Bowling Green despite being a commit of the old staff. Loving his athletic ability as a lineman, the new staff sealed the deal with an in-home and subsequent official despite briefly reopening his recruitment. .

Who He Reminds Me Of: Heckel is athletic, smart and a hard worker. In the mold of a Zack Chibane, but more naturally gifted. He will become a fan favorite.

February 3rd 8:08am

School: Maine South High School (Park Ridge, Ill.)
Position: Offensive Guard
Height: 6-foot-7
Weight: 240 lbs.
Other Offers: Bowling Green, Cincinnati, Illinois, New Mexico, Norhtern Illinois, Western Michigan, Wyoming

Recruitment Recap: O’Sullivan was a solid commit to Cincinnati before the new Syracuse staff came calling. He kept his official in December quiet as well as his intentions to commit to the Orange as he wanted to inform the Cincy staff first. He did and announced his decision shortly after his December visit.

Who He Reminds Me Of: O’Sullivan is another long, lean, athletic lineman. He has to add significant weight to his frame, but once he does, has a lot of potential. Hard to compare him to anyone right now until we see him fill out.

February 3rd 7:44am

School: West Bloomfield High School (West Bloomfield, Mich.)
Position: Defensive Back
Height: 6-foot-2
Weight: 195 lbs.
Other Offers: Bowling Green, Iowa, Iowa State, Purdue, Toledo

Recruitment Recap: Foster was committed to the Syracuse staff at Bowling Green and quickly decommitted when they left. He set up an official and committed during the trip. The Orange had to hold off Iowa, Iowa State and Purdue, all of which were trying to make a push down the stretch. Foster never waivered, however.

Who He Reminds Me Of: Foster is a bit unique in that he comes in as a safety but seems to have a lot of skills that suggest linebacker. Positional versatility is always nice. But because of that, he plays a little bit like Keith Bulluck.

Recruitment Recap: Armstrong was a Bowling Green commit who decommitted after the staff left for Syracuse. The Orange instantly became a favorite when they offered. He committed shortly after his official visit in January.

Who He Reminds Me Of: Athletic, fast and refined technique, Armstrong will be a contributor once he adds weight to his frame. He plays somewhere between a Cam Lynch and Josh Kirkland.

February 3rd 7:26am

School: Downingtown East High School (Exton, Penn.)
Position: Offensive Tackle
Height: 6-foot-7
Weight: 281 lbs.
Other Offers: Maryland, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, South Carolina, Wake Forest, West Virginia

Recruitment Recap: Clark has dreamt of playing for Syracuse since he saw The Express as a 10-year old. He entered an official visit weekend in January without an offer, however. He snagged on the first day of the trip and committed the next morning. But the way he committed was unique. During a team meeting, he announced his commitment when introduced to the surprise of players and coaches.

Who He Reminds Me Of: Clark is long and athletic, but has to refine some technique. I’ve used it before, but Adam Terry is about the best comparison as of now, but it will depend on how he fills out his frame.

February 3rd 7:21am

School: Cathedral High School (Indianapolis, Ind.)
Position: Defensive End
Height: 6-foot-3
Weight: 239 lbs.
Other Offers: Ball State, Miami (OH), Western Michigan

Recruitment Recap: Coleman was committed to Western Michigan. Then Syracuse hired away Mike Hart and Vinson Reynolds from the Broncos. Both had a strong relationship with Coleman and utilized that to flip him. Coleman committed during a visit to his school from Dino Babers and Mike Hart.

Who He Reminds Me Of: Coleman plays with a bit of a mean streak, which you need as a defensive player. He loves to hit, loves to get into the backfield and get after the quarterback. Similar in body type to former Syracuse great Terry Wooden.

February 3rd 7:18am

School: Osceola High School (Kissimmee, Fla.)
Position: Safety
Height: 6-foot-3
Weight: 190 lbs.
Other Offers: Bowling Green, Charlotte, Marshall, Massachusetts, Memphis, Oregon State, Purdue, South Alabama, South Florida, Temple, Tulane

Recruitment Recap: Clarke tried to commit to Syracuse over the summer, but the old staff would not accept. This just weeks after committing to Oregon State. He seemed to be favoring Bowling Green after Syracuse would not accept. When the staff was brought in, they had the relationship from their time at Bowling Green. They set up an official and sealed the deal.

Who He Reminds Me Of: Long, hard working, hard hitting, physical safety Devon Clarke has some Donovin Darius in him. Does that mean he will become that type of big time contributor and spend time in the NFL? Not necessarily. But their style of play is similar.

Recruitment Recap: An under the radar recruit, Williams’ name popped on the radar late. His only other power five offer was from Pittsburgh, but he took an official to Syracuse first. After the visit, he had committed and subsequently cancelled his trip to Pitt.

Who He Reminds Me Of: Under the radar, but athletic, quick and uses his hands well. McKinley Williams has a little Jay Bromley in him.

Recruitment Recap: Jones was an under recruited defensive back with length and speed. He is raw, but there is a lot to work with. Syracuse loved the upside and sealed the deal during an official visit in December.

Who He Reminds Me Of: Jones has a lot of size, length and versatility. He can play corner or safety with his skill set and body type. He reminds me a bit of Durell Eskridge but not quite as naturally gifted. He has a lot of technique work to do, but has a high ceiling.

2016 Early Enrollees

February 3rd 6:00am

School: Plant Senior High School (Tampa, Fla.)
Position: Quarterback
Height: 6-foot-3
Weight: 216 lbs.
Other Offers: Cincinnati, Clemson, Florida, Miami, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Ohio State, South Florida, Utah, West Virginia

Recruitment Recap: The old Syracuse staff did not think they had a shot at Rex, though they coveted his skills. After speaking with him in the fall, they realized they had a ligitimate chance to land his services. He took an official visit and committed. Then there was the coaching change. The Babers staff targeted him early and made sure he knew they wanted him to be a part of the program. He reaffirmed his commitment and arrived on campus in January.

Who He Reminds Me Of: Tim Tebow. No I'm not saying he will become that. But his running style and leadership ability are similar. Who knows what Culpepper will become, but if he can master the offense, he may have a very bright future.

February 3rd 6:00am

School: Forestview High School (Gastonia, N.C.)
Position: Athlete
Height: 5-foot-11
Weight: 170 lbs.
Other Offers: Appalachian State, Boston College, Duke, East Carolina, Georgia Tech, Mississippi State, NC State, Wake Forest, West Virginia

Recruitment Recap: After fielding several power five offers, Neal cut his list down to Syracuse and in-state Wake Forest. Ultimately, however, he felt at home in Central New York and picked the Orange. After the old staff was fired, it was only a matter of weeks before Neal was going to enroll. The new staff made sure he knew he was a priority, and after an in-home and official visit, Neal was sold.

Who He Reminds Me Of: Neal is similar to Ervin Philips with his slashing, elusiving running style. Where Neal is better coming out of high school is as a receiver. He is a natural route runner with solid hands. That should serve him well in the slot in Babers' offense.

Recruitment Recap: Ruff committed to Virginia in September. After the UVA staff was fired, Ruff looked around behind the scenes. New Syracuse assistant Nick Monroe had an established relationship with Ruff and moved quickly to get an in-home visit. He convinced Ruff to take an official, and that sold the three-star backer on the Orange.

Who He Reminds Me Of: A big, physical linebacker with enough versatility to play defensive end? That sounds a lot like Luke Arciniega, who called it a career after the 2015 campaign. Ruff, however, may have a higher ceiling and has a bit more explosiveness.
