One of the top players in the Midwest in 2017 is Detroit (Mich.) Cass Techn safety Jaylen Kelly-Powell. The four-star defensive back visited the Syracuse campus for the first time from Sunday through Monday, missing the "Best of the Midwest" camp in the process.
While missing the camp was not the original plan, he ended up snagging an offer from the Orange during the trip. He also loved everything Syracuse had to offer.
"The visit was great," Kelly-Powell said. "I got a chance to see the facilities and the campus. Also, I got to spend time with (secondary) coach (Nick) Monroe and (defensive line) coach (Vinson) Reynolds throughout the day.
"The campus was great with the new dorms and the stadium was outstanding."
The facilities were impressive to every one of the 11 Cass Tech players that visited, and Kelly-Powell was no exception. He liked the upgrade the program has made in that aspect and is looking forward to the continued improvements.
"The facilities are great and they're going to expand it more I heard," Kelly-Powell said. "The campus was wonderful. I saw the outstanding dorms that the players will be living in."
In any recruitment, bonding with the coaching staff is of critical importance. Spending time on the Syracuse campus, Kelly-Powell was able to start that process.
"Hanging out with coach Monroe and coach Reynolds was great," he said. "We talked about my recruiting process and many techinques I could use in my game. We also talked about life and how their head coach is such a great person."
Overall, the visit had a big impact on the Cass Tech standout. It gave him new insight into the Syracuse football program and put them firmly in the mix for his services.
"The visit did a lot for me to be interested in Syracuse," Kelly-Powell said. "Especially when they have a great coaching staff and they're a private school. They're alumni is pretty big too."
Kelly-Powell admitted Syracuse has a legitimate shot for him going forward and he plans to come back for a return visit either later in the spring or over the summer.
