Class of 2016 signee Matthew Moyer has been named Gatorade Player of the Year in Connecticut, USA TODAY announced earlier Thursday morning.
Moyer attends South Kent School (South Kent, Conn.), and is maintaining a 3.61 GPA as a senior. He is a member of the National Honor Society, is an accomplished classical violist, has volunteered on behalf of an area soup kitchen and as a youth basketball coach.
On the court, Matthew averaged 16.5 points and 9.5 rebounds this season for South Kent. He shot nearly 60 percent from inside the 3-point arc this season, while leading the Cardinals to the New England Prep School Athletic Council Class AAA semifinals.
He averaged 21.5 points per game in the NEPSEC Class AAA tournament.
"Matthew Moyer is a rare find in the basketball world," South Kent head coach Kelvin Jefferson told USA TODAY. "He is a high-major talent on and off the court. You can find him playing a classical piece on his violin or dunking a basketball with authority. His (basketball) IQ is off the charts and he is a great leader and teammate."
Moyer, a 6-foot-8, 215-pound senior, plans to arrive at SU towards the end of June.
