Potential starting lineups for the 2016-17 season

Taking a look at potential starting lineups for the 2016-17 season

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- After Syracuse's improbable run came to an end at the hands of North Carolina on Saturday night, CuseNation.com takes a look at next season and the potential starting lineups the Orange will have.

Lineup 1:

G: Frank Howard

G: Tyus Battle

G: Malachi Richardson

F: Tyler Roberson

C: Dajuan Coleman

Frank Howard could very well be SU's starting point guard next season. Will Tyus Battle come in and start as a freshman? A lot of people believe so. Obviously there is a big question mark surrounding Malachi Richardson and whether or not he'll return next season.

Lineup 2:

G: Frank Howard

G: Malachi Richardson

F: Tyler Lydon

F: Tyler Roberson

C: Dajuan Coleman

This lineup, in my opinion, could be the one we see on opening night. A lot depends on if Richardson decides to return, and if he doesn't, insert Tyus Battle in his spot. Boeheim may stay loyal to Coleman and give him the start with Paschal Chukwu coming off the bench.

Lineup 3:

G: Frank Howard

G: Malachi Richardson

G: Tyus Battle

F: Tyler Lydon

C: Paschal Chukwu

This lineup represents the idea that Tyler Roberson doesn't return for his senior season. There have been some rumblings, which is why Lydon would then start at the four. Howard, Malachi and Battle all keep their spots, while Chukwu gets the nod over Coleman.

Lineup 4:

G: Tyus Battle

G: Malachi Richardson

F: Tyler Lydon

F: Tyler Roberson

C: Paschal Chukwu/Dajuan Coleman

There have been conflicting reports whether or not Syracuse recruited Tyus Battle as a point guard. From watching him, he isn't a true point guard, but succeeds more playing off the ball. This lineup, depending on Chukwu or Coleman, would arguably be SU's best defensive lineup. With Battle and Richardson, 6-7 and 6-6 respectively, up top in the zone, offenses would struggle to be efficient.

Lineup 5:

G: Frank Howard

G: Malachi Richardson

G: Tyus Battle

F: Tyler Lydon

C: Paschal Chukwu/Dajuan Coleman

Here's the other version of the lineup if Roberson leaves. Lydon would almost be guaranteed to start at the four, Howard-Richardson-Battle would almost be guaranteed 1-3 spots, while the battle for center still remains intriguing.

Lineup 6:

G: Frank Howard

G: Tyus Battle

F: Tyler Lydon

F: Matthew Moyer

C: Paschal Chukwu/Dajuan Coleman

This lineup pertains to the idea that Richardson and Roberson wouldn't return, which would force Syracuse to start two freshman -- Tyus Battle and Matthew Moyer. Either Chukwu or Coleman would come off the bench. In this situation, Syracuse would likely add a graduate transfer guard, along with a 2016 forward/center prospect.

There are countless lineups the Orange could go with next year.

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

If he returns, Malachi Richardson will start. Also, incoming freshman Tyus Battle will most likely start, although it hasn't been confirmed yet. Battle and Richardson's ball-handling might not be up to par with other ACC guards, including Frank Howard, which may give him the nod at point guard.

If Tyler Roberson returns, and that is a big if, he will start at the four spot.

The starting center position will be interesting. Will Jim Boeheim go with his 5th-year senior Dajuan Coleman, or 7-foot-2 transfer center Paschal Chukwu?

Tyler Lydon is also a question mark. Does the coaching staff give him the start at the three or four, or will he come off the bench as the sixth man, similar to Dion Waiters role a few years ago? Regardless of what happens with Lydon, the Orange will need a reliable ball-handler in the lineup --  Frank Howard.

These are all good problems to have, especially if Richardson decides to return for his sophomore season.

Syracuse is also looking to add either 6-10 Taurean Thompson or 6-10 Cheickna Dembele, both 2016 prospects that could contribute right away next season. That would add much needed depth to the front court, a spot where SU lacked in depth this season. Syracuse could also add a grad transfer guard for next season.
