Syracuse Draws the Eighth Seed in NCAA Tournament and Will Host Albany in the First Round

The NCAA men’s lacrosse tournament bracket was released Sunday night after all conference champions were crowned. Syracuse drew the No. 8 seed after winning the ACC Championship last weekend and will host a first round game against the University of Albany on Sunday, May 15 at 7:30 pm.

The Orange dominated against Albany early this season with a 16-7 win when the Great Danes came to the Carrier Dome for their first game of the season. Since the loss to Syracuse, Albany has improved to 12-3. The team’s only other regular season loss was to Maryland before being shocked by Hartford in the America East semifinals.

Should Syracuse advance to the second round with another win over the Great Danes, the likely opponent would be No. 1 seeded Maryland, who plays the winner of Hartford/Quinnipiac in the first round.

The last time the Orange and Terrapins played against one another was in February of 2014. The Terps handled Syracuse, squeezing the Orange 16-8. Round two/ quarterfinals will be held at two neutral sites; Providence, Rhode Island and Columbus, Ohio. Syracuse’s side of the bracket will take them to Providence on May 21 should they advance.

The victors in Providence and Columbus will advance to the Final Four in Philadelphia. The lower quarter of Syracuse’s side of the bracket features two schools from the Ivy League; No. 4 seeded Yale and the No. 5 seed Brown. Yale beat Brown in the Ivy League Championship, winning the Bulldogs’ fourth conference championship in the last five years. John’s Hopkins received an at-large bid and is also featured in that quarter of the bracket, playing Brown in the first round. The Orange lost to Hopkins in Baltimore earlier this season. Unseeded Navy, to play Yale, rounds out the lower quarter. These teams are possible semifinal foes for the Orange, should they advance.

Across the bracket are three ACC teams in No. 3 seed Notre Dame, unseeded North Carolina and unseeded Duke. Notre Dame will host unseeded Air Force in the first round. The University of Denver is seeded No. 2 despite losing to the No. 6 seed Marquette in the Big East Championship. Marquette will host North Carolina. Denver will host the winner of Towson and Hobart. The Loyola Greyhounds are seeded No. 7 and will host Duke in the first round. Syracuse beat Hobart, North Carolina (twice) and Duke this season. The Orange are unfamiliar with Denver, Marquette, Loyola, Air Force and Towson. Of the bunch, Syracuse has only lost to Notre Dame.
