Syracuse landed one of their top linebacker targets in the 2017 class Tuesday night as three-star Detroit (Mich.) Cass Tech outside linebacker Zach Morton pulled the trigger, a source told CuseNation.com. Morton is the 52nd ranked outside linebacker in the 2017 class and eighth best in the Midwest.
He is coming to Syracuse to play defensive end, however.
Morton had other offers from Bowling Green, Cincinnati, Iowa State and Western Michigan. The 6-foot-4 prospect visited the Orange nearly three months ago back in February. He was offered during the trip.
Syracuse has kept in contact with Morton ever since and recruited him very hard.
"I felt like it was a great fit for me and my family," he said. "They love me and it felt right."
Morton's primary recruiter is defensive line coach Vinson Reynolds. He says the two have a very close relationship, and that was a big factor in his decision.
"He's personal and I trust coach," Morton said.
He added that he feels coach Reynolds will take his game to the next level.
Morton is the fourth commitment for the Orange in their 2017 class. Syracuse also signed Cass Tech's Tim Walton in 2016. They are after several more players from the school in 2017 and beyond. Morton says he plans to help Syracuse's efforts with those players.
