Syracuse Names Dan French Interim Athletic Director, Herman Frazier Promoted to Senior Deputy Director of Athletics

SYRACUSE, N.Y.- Syracuse University’s Chancellor Kent Syverud named Dan French its interim Athletic Director Thursday morning. Chancellor Syverud has also taken this time to promote Herman Frazier to the position of Senior Deputy Director of Athletics. These decisions have transpired quite rapidly after former Director of Athletics Mark Coyle announced he would be leaving the University for family reasons.

French graduated from the Syracuse University College of Law in 1995 and has been serving on the University’s general counsel for the last two years.

“I want to thank Chancellor Syverud for the opportunity to continue to serve my alma mater, especially at such a critical time in the department’s history and the history of the University. Last week in a message to our student athletes, coaches, and staff, Chancellor Syverud said the future of the athletic department is brighter than ever and I couldn’t agree with him more. In fact, as an alumnus and long time supporter of Syracuse Athletics, I cannot remember a time when our teams performed at such a consistently high level, on and off the playing field.”

During his time on the counsel, French and the staff have dealt with all of the University’s legal work and have worked closely with the University’s Office of Athletic Compliance. French is also a member of the Chancellor’s Executive Team and the Chancellor’s Council and was actively involved with the development of the West Campus Project that was announced a few days ago, including renovations to the Carrier Dome. French has a long history as an attorney, including having served as United States Attorney for the Northern District of New York.

“They are talented, they are dedicated and they are selfless,” French said of the Athletic Department at Syracuse. “The growth and well-being of their athletes always comes first. I am truly honored to be joining their team, even if just for a short time. I am also honored to be working alongside Herm Frazier, a decorated former college athlete, and an Olympian… I would not be standing here taking on this responsibility without Herm’s support.”

Herman Frazier was an All-American track runner at Arizona State University, and ran for the 1976 Olympic 4×400 relay team, winning gold. Frazier has been serving as the Deputy Athletics Director and Chief of Staff at Syracuse. Before joining Syracuse’s team in 2011, Frazier had served as the senior associate athletics director for sports administration at Temple University, the director of athletics at Hawaii, and the director of athletics at the University of Alabama-Birmingham.

“It is the vision of SU Athletics to be successful,” Frazier said. “We have the budget, we have the coaches.”

French will still serve on the University’s general counsel. He and Frazier will both be involved in actively seeking a new, permanent Director of Athletics.
