Syracuse lands inside linebacker prospect Keirston Johnson

Syracuse has added Sunshine State inside linebacker Keirston Johnson to their 2017 class.

It may be a dead period, but the momentum for Syracuse football recruiting continues. Jacksonville (Fla.) Robert E. Lee inside linebacker Keirston Johnson committed to the Orange, multiple sources told Scout. Johnson later confirmed the new on Twitter.

"At first, I was going to wait until I visited," he said. "But after I talked with (linebackers) coach Tom (Kaufman) today, I decided to go ahead and do it. I feel I have a great opportunity at Syracuse and I believe I fit in like a family there. All I hear are good things about 'Cuse. I also have family that lives in New York."

That family lives in New York city and is on his dad's side of the family, though Johnson admits he has never met them. That will likely change once he gets to Syracuse.

According to Johnson's mother, that family is very excited about his decision.

Also of note, Johnson's great uncle is boxing great Floyd Patterson.

When he told coach Kaufman of his decision, he received an excited response. It was quite a way to kickoff a holiday weekend for the Orange staff.

"He said it was big news," Johnson said. "Coach Tom was relieved they got me. They all say I'm on the top of the board."

Paramount in Johnson's decision was his relationship with coach Kaufman. The two spoke regularly. Even though Johnson hasn't visited Syracuse yet, coach Kaufman did visit him during the evaluation period and attended his spring game. That left a lasting impressing on the talented linebacker.

Regarding his first visit to Syracuse, Johnson said it will come sometime in July. No specific date has been set yet, but it will happen after the 18th, he said.

After committing, Johnson received a lot of positive messages from an excited Syracuse fan base.

"Means a lot," he said. "I'm happy there is so much love for the program and I'm blessed to be a part of it."

Johnson is the first inside linebacker to commit to Syracuse and second linebacker overall. He picked SU over offers from Maryland, FAU, Marshall, Memphis, Miami (Ohio), South Florida and others.
