Syracuse football has added a non-conference opponent to their 2017 football schedule, the program announced on Thursday. The Orange will host the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders on September 9, 2017 inside the Carrier Dome. It will be the first matchup between the two schools on the gridiron.
It will also be the first time Syracuse football has faced a current member of Conference USA.
The Blue Raiders finished the 2015 season 7-6 (6-2). They put up over 70 points against Charlotte and Jackson State. They lost in the Bahamas Bowl to Western Michigan 45-31.
Middle Tennessee played three power five programs last season and fell to all of them. They included Alabama (37-10), Illinois (27-25) and Vanderbilt (17-13).
MTSU is led by head coach Rick Stockstill, who has led them to a 64-61 record during his 10 seasons at the helm.
Interestingly, Syracuse faced Middle Tennessee in men's basketball in the second round of the NCAA Tournament this past season. The Orange won that matchup 75-50 as part of their run to the Final Four.
The game against MTSU is the third non-conference game in 2017. Syracuse also faces Central Michigan on September 16th and travels to LSU on September 23rd.
