Cordy, Dowels Out for Remainder of 2016 Season with Injuries

Syracuse has lost two of its defensive backs for the remainder of the season. Details inside.

Antwan Cordy and Juwan Dowels both left Syracuse's loss to Louisville last Friday with injuries. Now, the diagnosis is what most feared. Both Dowels and Cordy are out for the remainder of the season, Syracuse Athletics announced. Cordy has a forearm injury while Dowels suffered a knee injury. Cordy will have surgery within the next few days while Dowels surgery will occur over the next few weeks, per SU Athletics.

The news means more Daivon Ellison and Rodney Williams at safety. Ellison recorded his first interception last week and returned it 50-yards. Williams also saw action against the Cardinals. The wild card may be true freshman Evan Foster, who had a strong training camp this fall.

At cornerback, Cordell Hudson should regain his starting spot that Dowels snagged from him between weeks one and two. It also means true freshman Carl Jones will move up in the rotation and see more snaps. He already was on the field in each of Syracuse's first two games.

The Orange will face South Florida on Saturday, where they begin to work on replacing their two defensive backs. The game kicks off at 3:30pm Eastern.
