National Signing Day is always the first Wednesday in February. This cycle, that falls on February 1st. Here is how the recruiting calendar looks between now and then.
12/12/16 - 1/11/17: Dead Period
During this time, no face-to-face contact is allowed between coaches and recruits or their parents. That means no official, unofficial or in-home visits. College coaches are also not permitted to visit prospect's high school or watch him play/workout.
What is allowed during this time is contact via telephone, texting or social media with recruits, their parents and their coaches.
What this means for Syracuse: Expect more official visits to be scheduled and/or finalized with their commits and top targets. That is where phone and social media contact is so critical. Syracuse can also continue to recruit their top targets using these methods.
12/14/16: JUCO Signing Period Begins
Mid-Year Junior College prospects can sign their National Letter of Intent beginning on Wednesday, December 14th. The signing period runs through January 15th. This is for JUCO prospects who are graduating in December. For those graduating in May, they are subject to the same signing day/period as high school prospects.
What this means for Syracuse: December 14th is an important day for Syracuse football. It is when they find out about JUCO targets such as Ravian Pierce, Delshawn Phillips and Ryan Guthrie. If any of them decided to sign with the Orange, it will likely be on that day or within a few days afterwards.
1/12/17 - 1/28/17: Contact Period
Face-to-face contact is allowed during this time, as well as telephone, text and social media contact. Official, unofficial and in-home visits are all permitted as well.
What this means for Syracuse: We already know the weekends of January 20th and January 27th will be big official visit weekends. For the weekend of the 20th, commits Kadeem Trotter, Aaron Hackett and Markenzy Pierre are currently scheduled to take their official visits. Defensive back target Brian Edwards is on the schedule as well, but he is also considering visiting Florida that weekend.
For the weekend of the 27th, commits Tommy DeVito, Joshua Palmer, Sharod Johnson and Cam Jordan will be on campus. JUCO defensive end target Brandon Berry and Utah tight end commit Ben Moos will take their officials to check out the Orange.
Expect to see more names added to both weekend.
1/29/17: Quiet Period
During quiet periods, recruits are allowed to visit schools. College coaches cannot, however, visit recruits either at their school or home. They cannot have in-person contact with recruits or parents outside of on-campus visits. That includes coaches attending events or practices for recruits. Telephone, text and social media contact are all permitted.
What this means for Syracuse: Essentially, this means Syracuse can wrap up their big official visit weekend that starts on the 27th. They don't have to have visitors leave Saturday night, which would be earlier than the norm. Recruits will stay until Sunday, and head home anytime between late morning and early afternoon.
1/30/17 - 2/1/17: Dead Period
The same as the dead period above. No face-to-face contact is permitted. Telephone, texting and social media contact are all allowed.
What this means for Syracuse: No last minute visits during the few days before National Signing Day. Syracuse will do their last minute recruiting pitches via other methods.
2/1/17: National Signing Day
