Death, taxes and John Gillon at the free-throw line.
Syracuse may have suffered a setback against Louisville on Sunday, but in the midst of the loss, point guard John Gillon made all four of his free-throw attempts. That alone in a 20 point defeat would normally be an irrelevant stat. But not for Gillon.
Gillon has now made 47 consecutive free-throws, shattering the old record (37) held by Brandon Triche. In fact, Gillon's mark is good for fourth best ever in the ACC. The conference record sits at 66 and is held by NC State's Scott Wood.
If Gillon wants a shot at that record, not only will he have to keep making his free-throws, but the Orange will likely have to win a game or two in the ACC Tournament and in the postseason beyond that. Syracuse is guaranteed three more games even if they lose out, and Gillon is 19 behind the mark.
So the more games Syracuse plays, the more opportunities he will have.
The last time Gillon missed was nearly a month ago. It was on January 28th in the Orange's first big win of the season against Florida State. He was 13-14 in that game.
But the streak begs the question, as Gillon is now 10 clear of the old SU mark, will he ever miss a free-throw again? His streak includes a 14-14 performance against NC State, which started things.
Since then, it has been quite steady. A 7-7 performance against Clemson, 5-5 against Pitt, 5-5 against Duke, a pair of 2-2 performances and topped off by his 4-4 effort against the Cardinals.
It has been awfully impressive to watch. Especially for a Syracuse program that has a reputation of being historically subpar from the charity stripe.
The Orange wrap up the regular season against Georgia Tech on Saturday. The game tips at 4pm eastern inside the Carrier Dome.
