SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Perhaps Jim Boeheim is not headed into the final offseason of his Hall of Fame coaching career. His top assistant, Mike Hopkins, is expected to be named the new head coach at Washington according to multiple reports. ESPN is reporting it is a 6-year deal.
Hopkins has spent nearly his entire basketball life at Syracuse. After playing for coach Boeheim from 1989-1993, he become an assistant in 1996 where he has been ever since. In June of 2015, he was named the "head coach - designate" when Boeheim steps aside after the 2017-18 season.
Those plans seem to have changed.
There has always been skepticism regarding Boeheim stepping aside after next season. The news of Hopkins leaving for Washington may confirm those thoughts.
