Commitment Impact: Elijah Hughes

Breaking down the impact of Elijah Hughes transferring to Syracuse.

Committed Over: Elijah Hughes picked Syracuse over Seton Hall and Iona as transfer destinations.

Rated: Hughes was rated a three-star prospect in the 2016 class when he signed with East Carolina. Scout does not rank transfers.

Evaluation: Hughes is a 6-foot-6 prospect who can play shooting guard or small forward. He is a physical, strong player who can hit the outside shot, take his man off the dribble and finish at the rim. Hughes has a reputation as a good three-point shooter from his high school days but has developed his ability to score in the lane as well. With his length and quickness, Hughes will be a good fit at the top of the zone. His physicality and willingness to crash the boards make him a good fit on the back line of the zone as well.

Recruiting Impact: This is a big get for Syracuse. Yes he has to sit out the 2017-18 season, but he figures to be a replacement for Tyus Battle in 2018-19 assuming Battle leaves for the professional ranks. Because of that, he should be viewed as a 2018 recruit, essentially. Hughes will be two years removed from high school, have played at the division one level for a year, and spent a year in the Syracuse program.

Having someone with a lot of talent and potential combined with that kind of experience is beyond what they could have gotten in a 2018 recruit. Despite taking a 2018 scholarship off the table, Hughes is a big get.

Final Thought: Many may not view the addition of Hughes as a "sexy" or "important" snag for Syracuse, but do not let that fool you. Hughes checks all of the boxes for Syracuse. He plays at a position of need, has versatility, has the size and length to be a force on both ends in the SU system and can flat out score.
