Atkinson earns All-American Honors

The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) recently named Jamar Atkinson to the 2003 NJCAA Football All-American Teams. SUNY Morrisville head football coach Terry Dow said he was 99 percent sure the sophomore linebacker will attend Syracuse.

Atkinson, the 2003 Northeast Football Conference Defensive Player of the Year and Northeast Football Conference First Team - Defense selection, has been selected to the 2003 NJCAA Football All-American Honorable Mention Team - Defense. He started all 11 games for the Mustangs at middle linebacker, leading the team and finished second in the conference with 106 total tackles, 52 solo and 54 assisted for the defense this season. Eighteen of Atkinson's tackles were for a loss of 53 yards, including one sack for a loss of nine yards. He also recorded one interception for a 58 yard return, broke up six passes, forced four fumbles and blocked a punt. Atkinson also carried the ball for the Mustangs this season on one play, rushing the ball 42 yards for a score.

In his two year career, Atkinson recorded 171 total tackles, 81 solo and 90 assisted to become the all-time defensive leader at Morrisville. Twenty-six tackles were for a loss of 115 yards, five sacks for a loss of 53 yards, two interceptions returned for 65 yards, eight passes broken up, two blocked kicks, five fumbles forced and recorded a safety.

Atkinson was also a NFC All-Conference First Team Defense selection in 2002.

Atkinson is an individual studies major at Morrisville State and is the son of Dwight and Josephine Atkinson of Woodbridge, Virginia. He is a 2002 graduate of Garfield High School.
