Orange Now 7-1 With Win Over Loyola

Senior attackman Michael Powell dished out five assists and had one goal as No. 3 Syracuse defeated No. 20 Loyola 13-8 on Saturday in front of 6,399 fans at the Carrier Dome.<br><br>

The win marked the fourth straight for the Orange who also upped its record to 7-1 on the season. Syracuse will travel to Ithaca on Tuesday to meet Cornell at 7:00 p.m. Loyola falls to 3-4 on the season.

Seven different players scored for the Orangemen. For Powell, the six points equaled his career high. Brian Nee and Brian Crockett each record three goals and an assist, while Kevin Dougherty and Steve Vallone each had two goals and Greg Rommel and Brett Bucktooth each tallied one.

Syracuse led 7-2 at the half. Stephen Brundage and Nino Othman each scored goals at the start of the third period to pull Loyola to within 7-4. Syracuse added a goal in between two more by Loyola. Brundage tallied his second at the 9:12 mark and John Halip fired an outside shot at 8:04 to cut into the SU lead, 8-6.

Powell found Crockett with eight seconds remaining in the third quarter for a 9-6 lead. Powell scored his only goal of the game at 12:03 of the fourth quarter to give SU a 10-6 lead and Vallone made it 11-6 off a pass from Nee on a man-up opportunity at the 7:31 mark.

Brundage recorded his third goal of the game with 6:55 remaining. Nee netted his 14th and 15th goals of the season in the remaining minutes for Syracuse. Matt Monfett, who had two goals and one assist, for Loyola, registered his second goal with 2:14 remaining in the contest.

Powell now needs 28 points to become SU's all-time leading scorer. On Saturday, he moved ahead of Tom Marechek (1989-92) for sixth place on the school's career points list. Powell owns 260 career points.
