‘Cuse Coming On Strong For Binghamton DB

I had the opportunity to talk to one of New York State's top football players in Maine-Endwell (Johnson City, NY) QB/DB Shane Connelly. Connelly told me he has no offers yet but there are five Division One football schools that are actively recruiting him right now.

"Syracuse, Iowa, Boston College, Penn State, and Pittsburgh are recruiting me. Syracuse and Iowa are recruiting me the hardest."

Connelly plans on camping at Syracuse, Iowa, Purdue, Michigan, Notre Dame, and Boston College this summer. He would like to be given the opportunity to play quarterback in college, but would play defense (a lot of schools are recruiting him as a defensive back) if he has to.

When I asked Connelly who his favorite school is right now is he responded by saying, "I like Iowa a lot because they are an up and coming program and have a great engineering program. I also like Syracuse because it's close to home and because they are the only one that has come to my school. Assistant Coach David Walker just came by the other day. Iowa has been my favorite school but Syracuse is not far behind. We will see who offers first." Connelly would like to make a decision before his football season starts in the fall.

Connelly is a 6-foot-3; 195-pound QB/DB that made third team All-State and 1st team All-Binghamton Metro Area in 2003. He passed for 990 yards and eight touchdowns last year for Maine-Endwell, while rushing for 280 yards and five scores. Connelly also starred at free safety, recording 50 tackles and two interceptions. Connelly is widely considered by many to be one of the top 20 football players in New York State in 2005.
