Gator Bowl snubs Syracuse

The Orangemen produced an emphatic victory against Boston College last Saturday in hopes of convincing Gator Bowl officials they deserved a spot as the second place team in the Big East conference.

It didn't work.

Virginia Tech and Florida State accepted Gator Bowl invitations today, according to ESPN's Web site, meaning Syracuse will likely end up in the Bowl in Phoenix on Dec. 28, despite having at least one less conference loss than the Hokies.

The Gator Bowl gets the second choice of Big East schools and does not have to take the second place team. Virginia Tech beat Clemson in the Gator Bowl last year.

"We are ecstatic to be going to our seventh New Year's bowl in nine years," V-Tech head coach Frank Beamer told "This is certainly a compliment to our program and to our great fan support."

Look for Syracuse to accept an invitation to the Bowl as early as tomorrow. Syracuse officials did not return calls for comment.
