The high scoring 6-3 shooting guard from Bay City, Mich., is in the process of making several big decisions regarding his future. Devendorf recently decided to transfer to powerhouse Oak Hill Academy in Virginia for his senior campaign. Within the next couple of weeks, he's also ready to pull the trigger on a college decision.
"I am transferring for academic reasons and because I am trying to stay out of trouble," Devendorf said. "Trouble has a way of finding me, because I am in a small town of about 48,000 people, so I get got a lot of attention and every little thing leaks out."
After scoring 17 points in the North's semifinal round victory here at the USA Basketball Youth Development Festival on Saturday night, Devendorf told us that he will pick a college shortly from among three choices: Michigan State, Syracuse and Florida.
"I am going to announce my decision at ABCD," he said, referring to the upcoming Reebok ABCD Camp in New Jersey from July 7-11. "I've been focusing on these camps for the past two weeks, and then I will get a week off to think about it and sit down with my family and coach. I think it's just the right time to announce it, before I go to Oak Hill, to get all the pressure off me."
Each of the three finalists on Devendorf's list have offered, although he declined to name a leader at this time.
A creative offensive talent who thrives in up tempo settings, Devendorf said he's still trying to figure out the best fit for him. Each of the three programs on his list has its advantages.
"I like the run and gun atmosphere, but I am trying to go to school that will get me ready for the NBA," he added. "Tom Izzo can definitely get me ready for the NBA. That goes for all of the coaches."
Devendorf had committed to Michigan State as a rising junior, only to rescind the commitment and open the recruitment back up months later.
"I would say that Syracuse and Florida suit my game, but Michigan State gets me ready for what I want to accomplish," Devendorf explained. "So it's really a close decision right now."
Devendorf has already seen Michigan State, since it's close to home.
"I know the whole campus," he said. "I pretty much know everything about Michigan State."
He's also paid an official visit to Florida and an unofficial visit to Syracuse in recent weeks.
"The visit to Florida went well," he said. "I hung out with the players and coaches, and I toured the campus as well."
"Syracuse was an unofficial visit, and I liked that campus because it's a city environment," Devendorf continued. "They're two very different campuses, but I like them both a lot."
We'll keep you posted on Devendorf's situation as his decision nears. Stay tuned!
