Mayben Sits Out Peach Jam

NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. -- Just making it to the Nike Peach Jam Invitational is an accomplishment in and of itself, so Jim Hart was certainly happy to learn that his Albany City Rock program earned the invite after a solid spring on the travel circuit.

But now that the City Rocks are down here, they appear to be operating on a skeleton crew. The result has been a pair of losses on Wednesday during the opening round of pool play at the Peach Jam.

The City Rocks dropped a 60-54 decision to Oregon Select in the morning, then lost 63-54 to the Wisconsin Playground Warriors on Wednesday evening.

Among the Albany regulars or semi-regulars who didn't make the trip were Tiki Mayben, Paul Harris, Mel Baumbolden, Andy Robinson and Brian Ledbetter."

"They are our five most athletic kids, and they are all in summer school," Hart said.

Mayben, who committed to Syracuse last year, is taking core courses this summer at Troy H.S. in Troy, N.Y. He had also been hampered by nagging injuries this spring.

"Tiki has been bothered by a hanging toenail, and then at the end of the Nike Skills Academy last month, the nail came off," Hart explained. "So he went on antibiotics, had to miss 10 days and couldn't play in the USA Youth Development Festival in Colorado Springs."

Hart added that Mayben is not permitted to miss more than three days of summer school. "We couldn't have him come here and miss four days," Hart said.

Come the Main Event in Las Vegas next week, that will change. "In Vegas, we plan on having all of them," he said.
