But the husky 6-8, 245 pound center/power forward has used the evaluation period to put his name on the map and pick up some major college offers.
Onuaku, who attends Episcopal H.S. in Alexandria, Va., turned in a solid performance on Tuesday night at the Best of the Summer Tournament here at Loyola Marymount, collecting 11 points and a number of rebounds in D.C. Assault's 67-41 pool play victory over IEBP #2.
Onuaku began his July odyssey at the adidas Superstars Camp in Atlanta, and then continued to open more eyes with his play at the Reebok Summer Classic East in New Jersey and the adidas Super 64 in Las Vegas.
After helping D.C. Assault win on Tuesday night, Onuaku told us that he's been offered scholarships thus far by St. Joseph's, Clemson, Maryland and Georgetown. Other programs showing a sincere interest in Onuaku include Pittsburgh, St. John's, Syracuse and Michigan. He has already unofficially visited nearby Georgetown.
"I like the different camps that I've played in and the experience I've enjoyed," Onuaku said. "I think that I've come up against the best and proved to myself that I can play with anyone."
A player best suited for the half court game, Onuaku is a solid basketball player who plays within his means. He doesn't try to do things that he's not capable of -- rather, he concentrates on scoring in the low post, rebounding and challenging shots.
And what else could someone expect a big-bodied center to do? He may not be a sexy run/jump athlete, but he's an intelligent basketball player who understands his limitations and plays within those confines.
Onuaku said that he will consider four factors when choosing a college: academics, athletics, social life and the history of the basketball program.
As a junior this past season at Episcopal H.S., he averaged 16 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks per game.
Onuaku plans on making a fall decision, so we will keep you informed as his recruiting process comes along this summer and into the fall.
