Thomas Talks About His Favorites

Things went well this summer for DeAndre Thomas, the massive 6-8, 290-pound post from Chicago (IL) Westinghouse HS. He helped his Illinois Fire AAU squad win games by doing damage in the paint, and he improved his conditioning along the way.

There are a number of Big Ten and Big East schools calling on the big man and he's just getting started on sorting it all out.

"It went great," said Thomas of his summer. "We finished up in LA and Vegas strong - we made the Sweet 16 in both of them. I ran the floor better and I've lost a little weight."

Thomas is still working out, trying hard to shed even more pounds before high school season starts. Since coming home to the Windy City, he has also been fielding calls from many schools. "There have been a lot of people," said Thomas. "I'm hearing from Syracuse, Ohio State, Fresno State, Seton Hall, Purdue, Illinois, DePaul, and some others."

Ohio State, Fresno State, Purdue, Illinois, and DePaul have all offered the big man. He maintains that he has no leaders at this point and is completely wide-open, to the degree that others could still jump in. He commented on several of the schools on his current list.

On Seton Hall: "I like the head coach and the coaching staff. I think I can go in and play right away and make an impact. I like their situation." On Syracuse: "I like the Orangemen a lot. I like their program and I like their coach. I like that they help you get to the next level."

On Fresno State: "I don't know that much about them, but Melvin Ely has given me some info. He says it's quiet and they have nice facilities."

On Ohio State: "It's a great program that's rebuilding right now. But they went to the Final Four before, and they can get to the Final Four when I'm there."

On Purdue: "I love the coaches. They have a lot of interest in me."

On Illinois: "I like Bruce Weber. A lot of Illinois kids are there and they're good friends of mine."

On DePaul: "It's close to home. I like the coach and I like the way they play."

At this point, Thomas isn't sure if he'll definitely sign in the fall or wait until the spring. He wants to take his time and is absolutely certain he will take all his visits. He's got a few schools in mind. "I'm going to visit Seton Hall, Syracuse, and maybe Fresno State," said Thomas. "Also, Ohio State but I could visit there unofficially too. I'm going to take all five visits."

Thomas is open to going away for school and doesn't necessarily favor any particular conference at this time. "I want the best place that will get me to the next level," said Thomas. "I want to see the atmosphere and see how I get along with all of the players."
