Syracuse at Purdue: Preview

Overview: Syracuse heads to Purdue to take on the AP No. 18, ESPN/USA Today No. 19 Boilermakers. Though Purdue is favored to win this game, the Boilermakers did drop their opening game last year against Bowling Green.

Offensive Scouting Report: Quarterback Kyle Orton leads a offensive group that is returning eight straters. Orton has thrown for 6,247 yards and 32 touchdowns, completing 58.1 percent of his passes. On the run game, Jerod Void, who rushed for 13 touchdowns last year, looks to try to pick up where he left off.

Defensive Scouting Report: Defense will be the key to Purdue's season. After losing eight starters, Purdue will look to defensive end Ray Edwards to fill the void left by Shaun Phillips, Purdue's all-time sack leader. In the secondary, only cornerback Antwaun Rogers returns.

Notes and Quotes: Joe Fields has won the starting quarterback job, beating out Xzavier Gaines and Perry Patterson. Still, Syracuse coach Paul Pasqualoni wouldn't rule out going with Patterson should Fields faulter.

"You never know any game you start if you're going to finish with that guy," Pasqualoni said. "Ideally, we are not looking to go into this game with a rotation of quarterbacks. We are looking to go into this game, start a guy and, hopefully, he plays well and he finishes. That being said, we wouldn't hesitate to do whatever we have to do."
