Gaines meets with Pasqualoni to talk about future

Syracuse quarterback Xzavier Gaines met with Syracuse coach Paul Pasqualoni about "personal issues" yesterday afternoon at 2 p.m, Pasqualoni said.

Pasqualoni also said that he had given Gaines the week off. Gaines could not be reached for comment.

Gaines had been involved in a three-way battle for the starting signal caller position ever since quarterback RJ Anderson graduated last year. But as time wore on, it became a two-man race between sophomore Perry Patterson and freshman Joe Fields.

Jackson to return

Syracuse cornerback Tanard Jackson, who was stabbed following a party after the team came back from a game against Virginia on Sept. 25, may play during Saturday's game against Florida State.

"Tanard will be in practice today," Pasqualoni said. "We will see how he does."

"If Tanard is back that will help. He has played great back there in all four starts. That is a key position on the team and he has played the most, so it would be very nice to have him back."

First down, who?

Pat Campbell, the Carrier Dome managing director sent an e-mail last Thursday to all season ticket holders in an attempt to start a new tradition.

When the Orange earned a first down, the public address announcer said, "First down," and the crowd was supposed to respond, "Orange," while signaling a first down, much like a referee would do.

The idea was a bust as few of the 40,153 on hand followed.

"It sounded scripted," one fan said. "People weren't doing it because they wanted to, they were only doing it because they had to."
