Syracuse Beats St. Rose in Final Exhibition Game

Hakim Warrick scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Demetris Nichols and Josh Pace each had 17 as Syracuse finished off its exhibition schedule with a 91-59 win over Division II St. Rose on Monday.

A dunk by Terrance Roberts gave Syracuse a 12-11 lead with 10:50 left in the first half. Led by three assists from freshman Josh Wright, the Orange went on an 18-4 run in the next four minutes to lead 30-15 with 6:50 in the half.

Syracuse defeated Le Moyne last week in its first exhibition game, 101-46.

"We had a lot of lapses tonight where they had some rebounds they shouldn't have gotten, some shots they shouldn't have gotten off, but we'll be ready when the season starts," said Pace. "We didn't come out tonight thinking we were going to play bad, but it's not expected that we're always going to play perfect."

Adam McGuire led St. Rose with 13 points and five rebounds.

Syracuse went into halftime with a 44-24 lead and led by as many as 37 points. But the Orange struggled at times with a significantly shorter team.

St. Rose was able to pull down 21 offensive rebounds and actually took 13 more shots than the Orange.

Syracuse also turned the ball over 23 times with Gerry McNamara leading the way with five.

"I thought our decision making was poor," Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said. "Gerry and Josh (Wright) were not good tonight. They weren't good in any aspect of the game. They didn't pass well, shoot well, or defend well. Other than that, they played great."

Notes: Craig Forth played only nine minutes because Boeheim didn't want Forth chasing around a smaller St. Rose team. … With less than 3 minutes to go and the game out of reach, the crowd started to chant "We want walk-ons." With 1:37 left, Boeheim let all five walk-ons play. … The exhibition game featured some rules the NCAA is experimenting with. There was a restricted arc 3 feet out from the basket, the 3-point line was an extra 9 inches out and the free throw box was 3 feet wider.
