Chestnut makes big plays

Scout.com recruiting service only gave him two stars. His forty-yard dash is a little slow. He isn't a nationally ranked defensive back, and he wasn't invited to the East/West Senior Game local Christian Brothers Academy star Greg Paulus started in.

So that begs a couple questions…Who exactly is Nick Chestnut? And why is Syracuse Football so excited about him?

Maybe this story will help shed some light.

Chestnut's team, Cypress Ridge High School, was down 14-0 in its last regular season game. The Rams needed the win to make the playoffs. Coach Gary Thiebaud decided it was time for a change and brought in his 6-foot-1 DB to play quarterback. Chestnut led Cypress Ridge to its first touchdown just before halftime. The Rams came out firing and scored to start the second half. With the game tied, Chestnut went up to his coach:

"He told me to get him the ball." Thiebaud says. "That he knew he could beat his guy on a post route.

Coach Thiebaud listened. 78 yards later the Rams were up 20-14. The kicker missed the extra point. On the next drive, the opposing team scored and made the point after to go up by one. With just minutes left, Chestnut went back in at quarterback and orchestrated a drive all the way to the two-yard line where he handed off for the winning score. He and his Rams were headed to the playoffs.
