Junior Day Trip Stirs up Memories

When George Brown accompanied his young son Aaron to the University of Pittsburgh recently, it invoked some terrifying memories for the elder Brown. The Brown family hails from Cincinnati (Ohio.) as did former first-round NFL draft pick Shane Curry. Aaron attends Princeton high school, the same school Curry attended in the mid 1980's. That's where the story begins.

As George Brown recalls, meeting new Pittsburgh head coach was bitter sweet. He has much respect for Wannstedt; however it brought back a common horror for both men. Wannstedt was the defensive coordinator at Miami when Freshmen All-American Shane Curry transferred from Georgia Tech. Curry and former roommate Russell Maryland quickly blazed a path to stardom, and future NFL riches. Curry was selected in the first-round of the 1991 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts, then shortly after disaster struck.

"After his rookie season, right before summer camp Shane came home," George Brown said. "He was shot and killed by a 15-year old kid, right in the prime of his life."

Now, George's son Aaron Brown a 6-6 and 283-pound offensive tackle is the big man on the Princeton high school campus. Brown has 25 written scholarship offers, and is arguably one of the best offensive linemen in the nation. Now let's breakdown Brown's offers by conference

ACC: Florida State, Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia Tech.

Big East: Pittsburgh, Syracuse, West Virginia, and Boston College.

Big Ten: Ohio State, Purdue, Michigan State, Indiana, and Wisconsin.

Big 12: Oklahoma and Nebraska.

Conference USA: Cincinnati, and Louisville.

MAC: Miami (OH).

SEC: Auburn, LSU, Florida, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Alabama.

According to George Brown, they have had their fill of junior day events.

"I don't like them, basketball is nice, but we're there for football," George Brown said. "Pittsburgh had so many kids there we only stayed for about an hour, maybe an hour and a half. I'm just telling coaches we'll come around when nothing else is going on so we can see what we need to see.

What's next on the agenda for the Brown family?

"We're considering hitting Auburn and Alabama, maybe a Florida/Miami trip, we may hit a few spring games like Ohio State and Auburn," George Brown said.
