Rautins headed for Syracuse

Jamesville-Dewitt Head Basketball Coach Bob Mckinney got some great news when he talked to his star player Andy Rautins earlier this week.

"Andy and his dad sat down with Coach Boehiem and Coach Fine Monday night and they offered him. He committed to Syracuse the next day after talking about it with his dad."

Rautins also had offers from Providence and St. Bonaventure. When I asked Coach McKinney on why he thought Syracuse recruited Rautins this late in the game he responded by saying, " Syracuse has been following Andy all season but I don't think it got really serious until Coach Boeheim started showing up at our last couple of games. Coach Boehiem told him they need outside shooters to help Gerry next year and he can definitely provide that. Andy is also a real good ball handler and a great foul shooter. The only question with Andy right now is can he put on enough weight and strength to contribute next year."

Coach McKinney also said that Rautins will not go to prep school next year and will only red shirt if he has too.

"Coach Boehiem wants him to contribute next year that is why it is important for him to gain weight and muscle now. He keeps growing; he is about 6'6 now and could grow to about 6'7 or 6'8. He needs to gain weight to be able to play next year and he knows that. The kid is a tireless worker and will do what it takes to play. Syracuse is getting a steal, he is a tall 2/3 that can shoot the three, handle the ball, and make free throws. If he puts on weight his potential is unlimited."

Andy Rautins is a 6-foot-6, 170-pound shooting guard/small forward that average 24.6 pts, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists this past season. He hit also hit 71 three-pointers in 23 games. Rautins had two games with over 40 pts this season and had one game were he hit six three's in a game. Rautins father is former Syracuse University basketball star Leo Rautins.
