Pena drawing lots of interest

If you're Antonio Pena, you can't really complain.

While some prospects are looking to drum up interest heading into the summer, the 6-foot-7, 220 pound power forward from St. Thomas More Prep in Oakdale, Connecticut, has a tidy list of eight high major schools, and the summer hasn't even started yet.

"My list is: Louisville, Syracuse, Miami, Cincinnati, St. John's, Pittsburgh, Texas, and Georgetown," said Pena. "They've all offered. Coaches from all of the schools came in to see me recently."

Pena does not currently have a leader, and he doesn't have a time table for his decision.

We caught up with Pena at the IS8 League in Queens, and the native of Queens is, by our estimation, in the best playing shape of his career.

Since going to St. Thomas More, he's shed some weight, and is looking as mobile and fit as we've seen him. He's also made strides with his game. His ball handling ability has improved, and he's even handling it a bit in transition.

You knew that Pena was only scratching the surface offensively as a player at Lincoln, and now, under Jere Quinn's tutelege, he appears to be harnessing that potential. While he's not quite a three, he's beginning to show the types of skills that make you wonder if he could become one down the road.

Antonio is looking for a couple of things out of his future college coach.

"I'm looking for a good coach I can rely on in the future," said Pena. "A coach who can help me get better and develop my skills."

For his summer schedule, he's got the ABCD camp pencilled in, but little else is certain.

"I'm going to the ABCD camp, but beyond that, I'm not really sure what I'm doing," said Pena. "Most likely I'll play with the (New York) Panthers, but I'm not exactly sure."

Pena will travel with the Panthers, whom he played with at the Real Deal on the Hill in Arkansas, recently, but he'll likely suit up for the Gauchos, as well. At IS8, he played with the Juice Crew this past weekend.
