Walk-on kicker John Barker went one for three against Pittsburgh last week. The freshman hit the goal post on both of his misses, one from 32 yards and another from 43 out. Head Coach Greg Robinson said the weather may have played a factor, but his kicker is still accountable.
"You can say that (it was the conditions), but he has to make those," Robinson said. The field wasn't that bad. The timing was fair, it wasn't a great snap, but it was doable. He spun the ball well, it was just a little inside. The timing of it was maybe a tenth of a second off."
Although Robinson was upset by the misses, he says Barker is still his guy.
"I wish he would have hit them both," Robinson said. "But I have confidence in him. I think he's a good kicker. I'm going to stick with John."
Barker has hit five of eight field goal attempts so far this year, with a long of 45 yards. Robinson said his young kicker has a bright future ahead of him.
"In the field goal world, I'm going to stick with John," Robinson said. "I think he's going to be a real good kicker."
