Brash Legree wants to embarass opponents
Much like most of the players who come from Brooklyn, Legree, rated the No. 40 quarterback in the nation, has more to say than your average high school player.
"I'm the type of person that likes to do down the field. I can throw all the passes, but I wanted to take shots. I hate that when you get up a lot of points, you have to take a knee and stuff," said Legree, who, flanked by his tearful mother and grandmother, signed with SU today, seven months after verbally committing to the Orange.
"I want to embarrass people. I'm the type of player that wants to leave no doubt in peoples' minds that I was the best player they ever played against," he said.
Should he live up to those comments over the next four or five years, it's safe to say Cuse fans are in for a fun ride. Legree, a 6-foot-4, 210-pound senior, chose SU over Purdue and Toledo because of the family atmosphere, first and foremost.
"It was the best fit for me. When I'm there, the coaches make me feel wanted and the players make you feel like everyone wants you to be the best you can be," he said.
The SU campus is a six-hour drive away from home, but in some ways it seems like a lot farther.
"It's a big change in atmosphere. Brooklyn is kind of a rowdy place, and Syracuse is more calmed-down. You don't have as many things to do as you do in Brooklyn," he said. But that's no concern, he said. "Not at all, because I'll be with my teammates,"
Legree had his best year as a junior, posting 1,485 yards and 15 touchdowns en route to New York City player of the year honors. At SU, he'll battle for a spot high on the depth chart with another touted quarterback recruit in Cody Catalina.
"It's really an open competition," he said.
Another bit of good news about Legree: He's qualified academically, he said.
