Thump Uncensored, Pt. 2

Thump talks about his journey from JUCO to Syracuse, what's he's like off the field, and high school, in the second part of Belton's three part series.

Are you still arrogant?
I wouldn't say I'm arrogant now. I'm very coachable and I'm not the type of guy that knows everything. The confidence I have in myself now is fine.

Was it hard not being eligible?
Coming out of high school I was a knucklehead. I wasn't a bad person, I wasn't getting in trouble. I just wasn't focused on academics. I felt football was the world to me. That's all I cared about. I got to junior college and I had to do a lot to do to even be eligible. I stayed for three semesters and I went to summer school. I really bucked down on my on my school work and put football on the back burner for a little bit.

What happened with the SATs?
The SAT was an issue. I'm not a guy for standardized tests. I didn't do well on the SATs or the ACTs. I didn't do well on either. It wasn't that I didn't try. I just wasn't getting it. I'm glad I went to junior college. It's a good feeling to know that you went somewhere and you did graduate and you have your degree. I think that's a bigger accomplishment for me to go to junior college and graduate then to come here with getting an 820 on the SAT. I didn't do well on the SAT. I didn't make 820 on the SAT. I went to junior college and graduated early in fact. I graduated in three semesters.

What are you like off the field?
You'd be surprised. I'm a history major and I like to read. I like to read a lot. I like to laugh at my roommates and tell jokes all day. And I love the women. I can't get away from them. I love the women. I like to try to draw but I can't. I try to draw a tree but I mess it up. Mostly I just read in my spare time.

Reading? What do you like to read?
The 'Bluest Eye' by Toni Morrison. I still have a lot to read but that was my favorite book. It was one of those books where the girl in the book was trying to find herself. It was just one of those type of books where in the end, she wasn't where she wanted to be. She wasn't happy.

Back to football. Describe high school.
High school. It was fairly easy. I came my 10th grade year and surprisingly they had me in JV. I was scoring like six touchdowns a game. They finally moved me up. I didn't score my tenth grade year. I kinda got wrecked up my 10th grade year. But I was still young. In 11th grade, it was back to the same thing. Just running everyone over and doing my thing.
