Is Syracuse Closing In On Speedy DB?

James Barksdale of Huntersville, North Carolina recently took a visit to Syracuse. He talks to about that visit and where he currently stands in his recruitment by SU.

Speedy cover guys at the corners are something every school is always on the look out for. Syracuse is no different and they may be reaching down to the Carolina's to find their man.

As unofficial visits go, James Barkdale's recent trip to Syracuse couldn't have gone any better.

Barksdale, a 5-foot-10, 160-pound athlete from Huntersville, N.C., met with SU's coaches and checked out the campus a couple of weeks ago and came away feeling stronger about the Cuse than before.

"Syracuse has always been on top of my list," he said, "but I like it even more after going up there."

Barksdale, a speedy cornerback who last year recorded 57 tackles, three interceptions, two sacks and 11 pass deflections despite missing three games, was especially impressed by head coach Greg Robinson.

"He was the first person we met. He might not have even known anything about me, yet he seemed really interested and was very good to me and my parents, and I felt really good about that. Me and my parents just felt really comfortable," Barksdale said. "He satisfied whatever worries I might have had."

He then met with some of SU's strength and conditioning staffers, who would play a prominent role with him, considering he'll have to add some weight before he's ready for Big East play.

"They definitely broke down everything that they would do with me. I was very impressed," he said.

Barksdale, who was part of relay teams that placed among the top three in North Carolina last year, said he's run a 40-time in the 4.3-second range (hand-timed). He also enjoyed touring the campus and checking out the academic facilities.

"Syracuse is great for me, because I want to get into broadcast journalism," he said.

Now he plans to make visits to Florida State and UCLA "just to show my face," though neither have offered. He had previously also visited UNC. He'd like to make a commitment sometime before school, and it would appear Syracuse is easily the favorite at this point. will keep you informed of any further developments.
