Local WR high on SU
The Syracuse football program just completed a couple of recruiting weekends, with players from all over the region coming in for junior day visits. But that's not to say nearby recruits aren't making their way to SU as well, and Syracusefan.com recently caught up with one local prospect with a strong high school resume and even stronger interest in playing for the Orange.
West Genesee High junior wide receiver Joe Fazio was in attendance last week for junior day and thoroughly enjoyed himself, though it's not as if the Orange need to do a lot of work to command his interest.
"I bleed Orange. I love it," said Fazio, who lives 15 minutes from SU and grew up idolizing Donovan McNabb and Marvin Harrison.
"We got to tour the campus and meet all of the coaches. I got to meet Greg Robinson and my recruiting coach [Dan Conley]. He's a great guy. He said that they're really interested but it'll come down to what I do at summer camp, so I'll go from there."
Fazio is a 6-foot-3, 195-pound receiver who recorded 75 receptions for 957 yards and seven touchdowns while helping lead his school to its first ever state championship last fall. A first-team all-state and third-team all-CNY performer, he's also a very strong student with plans of being a doctor or a lawyer.
So it's no surprise he's also being recruited by the likes of Penn, Princeton and Columbia.
"That's why I'm definitely keeping open interest in the Ivy schools," he said.
Fazio is more of a possession receiver than a game breaker at this point. He runs the 40-yard dash in the 4.65-second range but has great size, strength and ball skills.
"I've still got to get a little bit faster. But if you're going to press me on the line, that's not going to happen because I'm pretty strong. I've got the feet and the hands to run perfect routes. Just so you know, that's not me being cocky, that's what my coach says."
"I'm a receiver that will go up and get the ball. I'm not a guy who's going to [dazzle] you with speed. I like to go up and get the ball," Fazio said.
Fazio is awaiting his first scholarship offer, though he's also been receiving interest from major college lacrosse programs such as Virginia.
"I definitely have a higher interest in football," he said.
Fazio also has football interest from Temple, Duke and Buffalo, but his performance at summer camps could tell the tale in terms of new interest and offers. For Syracuse, though, there's no questioning his level of interest.
