Scouting Report on Ohio OL Brian Winters
Though Ohio has not traditionally been a recruiting hotbed for Syracuse, SU has managed to nab a few players from the Buckeye state the past few years. In need of offensive linemen, the Orange has been recruiting Brian Winters of Hudson, OH. Syracusefan.com caught up with his coach for a scouting report and recruiting update.
Winters, a 6-foot-5, 310-pound senior, has one offer – from SU – in addition to interest from Ohio State, West Virginia, Kent, Oklahoma State, Eastern Michigan and Akron. He'll likely play the remainder of the season and then determine which schools are most interested before scheduling visits or making a commitment.
"Everyone's been looking at him but his only offer is Syracuse. I think there are some others that are close and once I send his senior film out, he could be getting more offers. He's improved a lot from his junior year to senior year," said Hudson High coach Tom Narducci.
With Syracuse having offered early and kept in touch, we asked Narducci, does the Cuse stand a good shot at landing Winters?
"I would think so. He has family in upstate New York," he said. "We have talked to them [the Syracuse staff] but they're not allowed to call right now."
Among the other schools, Kent seems to be the stiffest competition at this point. It remains to be seen whether the appeal of playing near home is more important to Winters than attending a bigger name school.
"It's hard to say. I really don't know. They're [Kent State] going to have a say in [his recruitment]," said Narducci.
Here's the scouting report on Winters:
"He moves very well for a big guy. Not pretty well, but very well for a big guy, and I'm not one to throw the compliments around a lot," said Narducci. "He's a big kid and he's got a good base."
Narducci said Winters is being recruited mostly as an offensive tackle – the position he plays at Hudson – though he could envision him helping defensively on goal-line duty like former Hudson teammate Billy Nagy does at Wisconsin.
