Checking in with Taran Buie
Taran Buie of Bishop Maginn High School in Albany has been among the hottest guard prospects on the East Coast this fall, drawing attention from college recruiters coach to coast. One school highly interested in the dynamic junior combo guard is Syracuse.
Buie is an athletic 6-foot-2 guard who can do a variety of things. As a sophomore, he averaged 17.1 points per game, tops on a squad that included two Division I signees.
"Maryland, Syracuse, Rutgers, Georgia Tech and Notre Dame, I think, are probably the ones that are recruiting him he hardest right now,"said Maginn coach Rich Hurley. "He has probably known Syracuse the longest. He's been going to their camp since the seventh grade. He got to go to their elite camp [recently] and had a chance to meet some of their current players."
About his time spent up in the Carrier Dome at the Orangemen's Elite Camp, Buie recently said "Coach Boeheim just got back from the Olympics, and he was telling me how mature the NBA guys are and how they act. He was telling me how much he wants me there. The Syracuse guys were telling me about the school, and I know Paul Harris, and he called me afterward to talk to me".
When asked about the rest of the staff, he replied "I love Coach Hopkins. He's my man".
Boeheim is one of many head coaches who have stopped by Maginn recently for Buie, most of them attending a coaching clinic that Hurley held at the school last week.
Buie's game continues to improve after helping lead his team to a state title last year. He can score inside and out, finishes well at the rim and, according to Hurley, several recruiters have said he may have the best mid-range game of any guard in his class.
Buie won't be making a commitment anytime soon, it seems. "At the earliest I would say maybe sometime in the spring, but I think most likely it will be early in the summer. I need to go and check out the schools and meet with the academic people," he said.
Buie is an excellent student, as evidenced by his 90 average in the classroom. He'll soon take an unofficial visit to Harvard.
