'Cuse Has Work to Do

Melvin Gordon had a lot of interest in Syracuse very early in the recruiting process, however as time went on offers from other programs came in and he did not hear from the Orange staff. He finally picked up an offer from SU this week, but he still doesn't know the coaches and will need to build relationships with them for ‘Cuse to have a chance.

Melvin Gordon, a 6-foot-1, 185-pound running back from Bradford High School in Kenosha, Wisc., just picked up a Syracuse offer and admits that there is ground to be made up for them to get back into the race.

"Syracuse called me yesterday to tell me that my offer was on the way," Gordon explained. "I can't remember the name of the coach that I talked to, but he said the official offer was in the mail and would be here shortly. I talked to the running backs coach (Tyrone Wheatley) and he just talked about how he had just come in and he hadn't gotten around to seeing film until now and he had just seen me now and wanted to offer. He just reemphasized how good the school was and what they were looking for in players there."

"I was at Syracuse for a visit earlier in the year and we checked out the school and got a good feeling for it," Gordon said. "We saw the field, facilities and Hall of Fame room. Their facilities were great and we got to see the Heisman Trophy of Ernie Davis's which was great. I'm also a big fan of what Jim Brown did, so it was awesome to see that history. The people there were the best part because they were so friendly and it was amazing there. Everyone was just really welcoming to new people that came around and everywhere we went every single person just knew so much about the program and were really friendly with us."

Gordon already has plenty of offers and Syracuse came into the game very late, so we asked him for a very honest assessment of where the Orange stand.

"Syracuse did come in a little bit late and I had them really high early, so I was disappointed that it came in late, but they gave me a legitimate reason why, so I'm still going to be considering them as I haven't narrowed down things at all. I'm really at the same level with everybody, but I do have a great relationship with Iowa and I need to build a relationship with the coaches at Syracuse because I didn't talk to the coaches when I went down there and hadn't talked to anyone until I got this offer, so it's all about that from here on if there's going to be a chance of me going there."

Gordon finished his junior season with 96 carries, 1,060 yards rushing and 15 touchdowns, earning honorable mention All-State honors. He says he can bench 250-pounds, squat 385 and has a 35-inch vertical jump.
