Barnes getting more interest

Groesbeck, Texas athlete Matthew Barnes can be described as an "under the radar" player, but that status isn't likely to hang around once more programs get out to see him in the coming weeks.

Groesbeck, Texas athlete Matthew Barnes can be described as an "under the radar" player, but that status isn't likely to hang around once more programs get out to see him in the coming weeks.

At 6-foot-3, 227-pounds, Barnes has generated interest from TCU, Texas Tech and Baylor among others. He was invited to attend TCU's spring scrimmage two weeks ago but was unable to attend.

He does have plans to get to TCU over the summer however. He says the communication has been steady with TCU as well as a few others.

"I'm going to go up to their camp," Barnes said. "We've kept in contact and Texas Tech has called. Air Force is coming to watch me next week."

Barnes still doesn't have a verbal offer but that could be changing in the near future.

"They've just been telling me that they want me at their camps and they're very interested in me," Barnes said. "Air Force told me they want to evaluate me and if it goes well that might offer me."

Barnes stars as a fullback and safety for the Goats. Some schools like his ability as an offensive threat while others see him as defender.

"Texas Tech wants to put me at slot and I think TCU might want me at safety but they have me down as an athlete so we'll have to see. I'll play anywhere though, I just want to play."

Barnes is hoping his hard work in the off-season will pay off with an offer. He knows he's gotten stronger and faster and is ready to prove that when his team tests next week.

"I've been getting real strong and running a lot so I think I've gotten faster. We test next week so I think I'll be ready."
