Owens Makes 6!

The TCU Horned Frogs scored big on Tuesday when they landed arguably the biggest sleeper in Texas. Palestine DE Jarrell Owens pulled the trigger this afternoon and became TCU's 6th commitment of the 2014 class.

The TCU Horned Frogs landed their second commitment of June when Palestine's Jarrell Owens committed to them on Tuesday. The 6'3" 235 pound DE was coming off of a three day visit to Lubbock and Texas Tech when he made the call to become a Frog. HornedFrogBliz.com caught up with the newest 2014 commit to get his thoughts on his big decision.

"First off, I just really liked the TCU coaching staff when I was there visiting" said Owens alluding to his visit this past Friday. "The staff is great and I can fit into their defense because they're a defensive program and that's what made me go ahead and commit there."

With four offers on the table from TCU, Texas Tech, Texas State and Louisiana-Monroe, Owens was just starting to take off in recruiting. The East Texas sleeper started making a name for himself at the TCU camp in Kilgore a couple of weeks ago. He didn't stop there though and continued his emergence as a defensive force with another dominant performance at the TCU camp last Friday in Ft. Worth. The way he sees it, a dominant defensive player needs to be performing in a dominant defense.

"The thing is, I know I'm getting coached by great defensive coaches" said Owens. "Coach Bumpas is a great coach and he's been coaching for over 40 years so I know he can make me a great player just by being around him and learning from him."

"I sat with him and talked to him a lot and he really knows his defense and he just seems like a great guy."

Rewind to last Friday when Owens was at TCU for what he thought was just a visit, when he suddenly found himself changing into workout clothes to compete in a camp.

"I came to the campus thinking it was just going to be a visit but when I got there, I just got dressed out and just competed and did my best."

Owens more than competed. He consistently blew past the offensive linemen in one on one drills and turned in the second fastest forty amongst the defensive linemen with an impressive 4.66.

With his camp performance over, Owens looked around the weight room and the locker room and came away impressed. While he admits he didn't get to see the whole campus, what he did get to see blew him away.

"I didn't get to see the whole campus but I saw enough to know that it's a really nice campus" he said. "I went and had a little talk with the coaches and I just really liked everything about it."

With a three day visit to Texas Tech following his jaunt through Ft. Worth, some Frog fans were worried the Red Raiders might steal their hidden gem. To hear Owens tell it, it was a tough decision, but he was ready to make it his choice.

"It was to the point where it was like a battle between TCU and Tech" said Owens. "It was a hard decision but I knew whoever I committed to, I was going to be giving that school and those coaches my word as a man."

"I'm going to stay committed there and be a TCU Horned Frog forever" said an excited Owens. "I'm not going to turn my back on them for nothing, it would be like me turning my back on family and I would never do that."

Owens wasn't finished there. He continued on, explaining why it's so important for him to keep his word.

"I'm going to become family with these players and coaches and have fun playing football" he said. "When I get there, I'm just going to introduce myself to everyone and make friends but at the same time, when I step on the field, I'm going to be that dominant player and everyone will see that I'll do my part."

With a solid commitment from Owens, the staff has locked up one of the most underrated defensive players in the state. As some have mentioned, he reminds them a little of Ex TCU All-American Jerry Hughes. If he turns out anything like Hughes, have mercy on the rest of the Big 12.
