TCU was the first program to offer the nation's No. 47 prospect that should see a four-star ranking in the next Scout.com rankings update. It's no surprise that more team are sending interest Newsome's way; he's the top player on one of the top teams in the country.
Newsome has done a bit of everything for the Bearcats in their 11-0 season. Lining up at quarterback, running back and receiver, Newsome has accounted for 1,704 total yards and 21 touchdowns. While Newsome excels at catching and running the football, it's his ability as a return specialist that has college programs drooling. Newsome has a remarkable seven punt returns for touchdowns. Last week against Burleson, Newsome broke the Texas State record for punt return touchdowns in yardage in a single season. He needs just one more touchdown to tie the national record.
The offer from Clemson came somewhat as a surprise to Newsome, who hadn't talked to the ACC program at all during the process. Clemson offensive coordinator Chad Morris, a Texas native, called Newsome on Monday to give him the good news.
"I'm excited about it; I love the offense that they run. It puts players like myself in a position to make plays," Newsome said of Clemson. "I love the atmosphere down there."
Newsome received the offer from Texas Tech shortly after receiving the Clemson offer. Red Raider head coach Kliff Kingsbury himself made the call to offer Newsome.
"I love Tech and the staff," Newsome said of the Red Raiders.
Many feel that the race for Newsome's services is led by Baylor. The Bears have evaluated Newsome since the summer and offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery watched the speedster against Granbury a few weeks ago.
Newsome admits that the offer from the Bears is something he's waited for a long time. But, he also admits that TCU is still in the picture.
"Baylor was a game-changer for me, I love the staff," he said. "They're a favorite along with TCU."
Newsome will get an up close look at both programs in two weeks as he plans to visit TCU to watch the Horned Frogs take on Baylor in the final game of the season for TCU.
