Cumbie spent the last four seasons at Texas Tech, where he was co-offensive coordinator and outside receivers coach. One of his players was Eric Ward, who is among the all-time leading receivers in Texas Tech history. Ward was named a semifinalist for the Biletnikoff Award, the award given to the nation's top receiver, in 2013.
"We're very excited to have Coach Cumbie on staff," Patterson said. "We were highly impressed with him as a player and then as a coach. He is an outstanding recruiter and well liked and respected within the state of Texas."
Cumbie was the starting quarterback for Texas Tech in 2004, throwing for 4,472 yards which was the seventh best single season record of all time. He directed two 70-point games; one coming against Patterson and the Frogs in a 70-35 win.
In addition to his knowledge of offense, Cumbie is also regarded as a top notch recruiter. For Texas Tech's 2014 class, Cumbie recruited seven of their twenty-three commitments.
TCU has two quarterback commitments for their 2014 class; Foster Sawyer and Grayson Muehlstein. Muehlstein, recently named All-State after his 4,800 total yards and 61 touchdown season; is excited with the news of Cumbie becoming his future coach at TCU.
His family has known the coach since Muehlstein's older brother Garrett was recruited by the former Tech coach. Cumbie also recruited Grayson last season.
"I think it's great, I really like Coach Cumbie," Muehlstein said. "I know him from when he was at Texas Tech because he recruited me a little bit. He's a great guy and I'm excited about it."
Muehlstein is excited about the prospects of a new offense under Meacham and Cumbie; especially since it's an offense he's very familiar with.
"I think it's awesome, I really like the style of offense and everything, it's pretty much what I did in high school my senior year," he said. "I'm really looking forward to it and I'm excited about it."
Sawyer, who threw for 48 touchdowns with just two interceptions, is also looking forward to learn from both Cumbie and Meacham. All Saints also ran a similar style offense with Sawyer under center.
"I think it's awesome," Sawyer said. "Coach Patterson told me they were going to make some changes and I'm excited both of them are there. They're both great men not only as coaches but off the field as well. I've had the pleasure of knowing them when they were recruiting me from the other schools they were at. Coach Cumbie has always been nice to me and I know he and Coach Beck are pretty close. Coach told me he's a great man."
Both quarterbacks will arrive on campus in June.
