Practice Recap: 3/18

TCU head coach Gary Patterson discusses his team's spring practices.

TCU returned to the practice fields on Tuesday afternoon after a week long break for spring break. TCU head coach Gary Patterson met with the media following the two hour workout and discussed where his team is at after five practices.

What were your thoughts from the scrimmage?

"We gave up a couple of big plays on a couple of pass plays. (Kyle) Hicks kind of got banged up and so did Porter but I think both of them have a chance to be back before the end of spring ball."

Did the players retain everything they learned from the first week?

"We added some stuff today. Today was a big zone blitz for defense."

Has anyone separated themselves at quarterback?

"Trevone. Trevone took most of the 1's (in the scrimmage)."

How has Jordan Moore looked at receiver?

"Good. He actually caught a touchdown pass in the scrimmage. It's probably his most natural position believe it or not. If I could actually put some hurdles on the sideline it'd probably help him run."

Any other receivers stand out?

"Deante' Gray and Kolby Listenbee just because of their speed they can really help us. Josh Doctson and Ty Slanina as well."

Has it been a seamless transition with the new offensive coaches?

"There are some tweaks in practice that they've got to get used to but it was a lot better today than it was day one."

How has Tayo (Fabuluje) looked?

"Him and (Matt)Pryor both need to get in shape. Pryor is playing guard right now."

How big is the offensive line this year?

"Compared to last year; not even close. You've got three guys over 6-foot-7 and three guys over 350."

Is Frank Kee in that group?

"He's with the one's or two's. He might even be starting; him and Bobby Thompson."

How has Devonte Fields looked?

"He's a little tentative, but he's a lot better than he was since the beginning of last fall. I can tell you that. He's a lot more focused; he's already been through the experience. You don't want to make the same mistakes."

Have there been any other surprises through the first few practices?

"Ranthony Texada. I didn't know that he'd come along this quick. He's got to learn how to play big boy football. It's not about running by him, it's about playing the ball in the air against the big 6-4 receiver."

Are any of the young linebackers surprising you?

"Paul Whitmill has a lot of potential. He's got a lot of pop to him and he can run; has attention to detail which is what goes along with playing linebacker here."

What has happened with the tight ends and their role like Buck Jones and Griffin Gilbert?

"Buck Jones has actually played with the three's at 3-technique. In the scrimmage he played with the one's as a blocking back and played defensive tackle with the three's. He's got a chance."

Is filling Kenny Perry's old position a priority?

"No, I'm going to wait until I have more time to really think about it. I don't know if I'm going to split it or I'm going to make it the same. There's a lot of ways that I'm thinking about it. It won't be sometime until April or maybe the first of May. I've got a little time to think with all the people we have on our staff; what's the best niche."

Could some of those duties be passed on to (Eddie) Williamson?

"No, because Coach Williamson has other duties."
