Garland Lakeview CentennialJordyn Johnson is looking for someone to take a chance on him.
Though the 6-foot-5, 305-pound behemoth is receiving plenty of interest from schools around the country, he has yet to receive a scholarship offer.
"I'm hearing from everybody; Florida, Texas, Arkansas, Arizona, Iowa State, OU, TCU, UNT, SMU," Johnson said. "It's just nobody is taking the chance and offering me. I feel like I'm going to end up at the first place that offers me because honestly I feel disrespected. I see all these people are getting offers, people from around the area, that I know I am better than. I proved it."
Johnson's transcripts complicate things. He offered that a choice to blow off a semester his freshman year has haunted him and he has been playing catch up ever since. He did state that he is on track to graduate on time and on pace to qualify, but he wants to leave no doubt by continuing to raise his GPA and test scores.
In fact, Texas Tech assistant coach Trey Haverty visited with Johnson at Centennial on Tuesday only briefly because he had to get to class, though they did talk on the phone again later that night.
"Basically he told me I'm on their board still, I'm on there high, but they are just looking at the numbers right now--you know the breakdown of the guys they have and the offers they have out," Johnson said. "Basically, it's going to come down to if I can get my transcripts in order, so I am just working hard to get my GPA up right now. So, it's all going to rely on my SAT."
Johnson said Haverty has been in contact with him since the end of last season and he has been impressed by what he has heard so far.
"Really, I like coach Haverty a lot, just because of the relationship he has built with me," Johnson said. "He doesn't just talk football, we have just a regular conversation, he's not talking to me like a coach, he's talking to me like a regular person. I like that."
When asked what school or schools he wanted an offer from the most he didn't hesitate.
"Tech, to be honest," Johnson said. "Tech, maybe Florida. OU maybe, I like them a lot. It really all depends on who comes first, my first five, really, because that's probably where I'm going to take my visits to."
On the field Johnson uses his size and strength to eat up space and command double teams. In early April he turned in a very impressive performance at the Dallas Nike Football Training Camp.
"I had the chance to see Johnson at the NFTC in Dallas and on tape," said Greg Powers, a national recruiting analyst for Scout.com. "He is a jumbo defender who already has natural size to be a guy who can clog things up in the middle of the field. He uses his power and size as his main weapons to clog gaps. He will become more of a consistent force once he is able to get himself in better shape and add some more strength to that massive frame."
Lakeview Centennial had its first spring practice in pads Tuesday in front of several college coaches as is the case for high schools across the nation during the NCAA mandated spring evaluation period (Apr. 15-May 31). Johnson is confident if he continues grinding away academically and on the gridiron things will work themselves out.
"I want an offer, but it's going to come, I'm just waiting on it." Johnson said.
