Now it appears that decision will be delayed, and Kentucky may be a big part of the reason why.
The Mobile St. Paul's Episcopal School standout recently trimmed his list to Florida, Georgia and Mississippi State. He was expected to commit to the Gators, but a late change of events reshuffled his list.
"I was going to be Florida Gator tomorrow," he said. "But the Gators landed someone at my position and was told the corner was better than me, so my scholarship offer was taken away. This really made realize that I need to step back and see what happens.
My new finalists are Georgia, Mississippi State and Kentucky."
Asked why UK has entered the picture, Thompson said: "I've had interest the entire time and thought about visiting. I love Coach (Derrick) Ansley. He wants me to become a star in their secondary, which is really appealing to me.
"It's the one school I really want to find out more about. Kentucky is overlooked in the SEC and is known as a basketball school."
He hasn't set a date yet, but a visit to Lexington is in the works.
Don't expect a quick decision this time around.
"I felt like I needed to get my recruitment over with, but in the last few hours with the Florida situation, I should take my time," he said.
Scout national football analyst Chad Simmons offered the following scouting report on Thompson: "Thompson is a smooth athlete. He really sinks his hips well and bursts out of the breaks. He has long arms and he shows great anticipation when in coverage. He is a shortstop in baseball, and those soft hands are a strength at corner as well. There is a need to add weight, to get stronger, and to improve his ability to play physical. Solid tackler, but a better prospect in coverage."
