Spartans join the race for Williams

Nashville (Tenn.) Father Ryan safety picks up a Michigan State offer this week and one thing in particular had him excited about it.

While Michigan State has been steadily picking up 2015 commitments this month, it also has been turning its attention to the 2016 class and getting offers out to top targets.

One of the latest offers went to Nashville (Tenn.) Father Ryan safety JoeJuan Williams on Tuesday, as he continued a big summer.

“I talked to Coach Barnett, the defensive backs coach. He told me that I had an offer,” Williams said. “I was pretty happy because one of my favorite corners to watch last year is Darqueze Dennard. I was really happy that the school that he went to was interested in me.”

With the offer, Michigan State joined the likes of Alabama, Auburn and LSU, as well Penn State and Tennessee.

“I have been talking to Coach Barnett for a while now,” Williams said. “We were talking about how I had Alabama and he actually knew Coach Saban and worked for him a while ago …

”He said they really liked my highlight tape and he wanted to pull the trigger so they could be in the race.”

Beyond liking Dennard – and his physical style of play at MSU – Williams said he needs to do research on the Spartans, as he does when a school offers.

”Normally when a school offers, I look into them a lot more,” he said. “I will be doing that with Michigan State a lot more when I get a chance.

”I already know they are a great program with great tradition and they have a big rivalry with Michigan.”

As he heads into his junior year, Williams is hoping to continue to net more offers and prove what he can bring to a college program.

“I just want to show that I can play anywhere, corner, safety or star position,” he said. “I can play anywhere and then I want to make more plays.”
