Horned Frogs Scrimmage!

After seven days of hitting the practice field, the Horned Frogs moved the festivities to the stadium for the first time this year. Go inside BigPurpleNation.com for a scrimmage/practice report and a quick 1 on 1 interview with Coach Patterson.

( A very quick 1 on 1 interview with coach. He had a busy day and I did not want to take up much of his time. Hopefully next week we can get some longer video interviews.)

Notes from the Horned Frogs first scrimmage of the year….

Dalton targeting Young- TCU didn't air the ball out to many times during the scrimmage. Coach Patterson said after that they were more concerned about being physical today. When they did, Andy Dalton was looking Jimmy Young's way. The two connected twice on three attempts with Dalton looking his way a few other times before checking off.

Ross Evans- The freshman kicker had two chances during the scrimmage. With a decent cross breeze the whole day, he missed a 47-yarder wide right. A little later he was able to knock one in from 42-yards. The kick had an extra 10-yards or so on it. Coach Patterson said that he thought he did pretty good today considering the wind and it's the first time he kicked in the stadium in front a small set of fans.

Marcus Jackson- After a strong morning practice, Jackson continued to impress this afternoon with a couple nice runs off the options. His best run came midway through the scrimmage on a tailback option dive. Jackson held the ball and took it to the left side between the tackle and the end. It would have been about a 35 to 40 yard run before he would of been taken down. A nice day for the junior.

Tejay Johnson - Johnson had a great 7 on 7 drill right before the scrimmage. The safety totaled 2 interceptions throughout drills with one coming against Andy Dalton.

Jeremy Kerley- if we learned anything today, we learned that sophomore wide out Jeremy Kerley can catch anything. During 7 on 7 drills there was multiple times that he either caught a pass that was low or a pass that was thrown behind him. The wide receiver has great concentration when being closely covered by a db.

Aaron Brown- the senior running back who missed four games last year, looks to be fully back and healthy. Buzz around camp is that Brown is looking faster this year then last. During the scrimmage he took reps with both the first and the second team offense.

Coach Patterson on scrimmage: "I would sum this one up as a tired football team. Quite, no hits, kind of unusual. The #1 on both sides I think played well as far as doing what they needed to do. The #2 defense has a way to go, but I think they are just tired. We are a tired football team tonight."

Coach Patterson on linebacking core: "We have never had a better line linebacking core then we have right now."

Coach Patterson on next week: "We will sit down as a staff, every position will have a goal. Will evaluate our strengths and weaknesses and during practice we'll put ourselves into a situation to try to make us better."

Coach Patterson on the nice defensive takeaways during practice/scrimmage: "Takeaways are becoming a big thing to us. We led the nation in 2005 and we won the conference. The last couple of years we have had a lot of sacks but we haven't had as many takeaways. We really need to get the opportunity to get ourselves in that situation."
